Overview

Position Summary:

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Dialysis Technicians are critical members of the team who maintain the environment, including water treatment and equipment according to SBUH, Manufacturer, DOH, CMS, JC and AAMI specifications. Repairs and maintains equipment according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Oversees the nursing assistants related to their technical role, and collaborates with the nursing staff related to the technical operations of the unit.

Works with other departments (e.g., plumbing, plant management, electricians, housekeeping, and respiratory) for services required for the daily operation of the unit. Works efficiently with Medical, Nursing and Technical staff. Manages inventory supplies on the dialysis unit, as well as in the Pavilion. Maintains an inventory of all dialysis equipment in the Towers and the Pavilion. This position has overnight and Sunday on-call responsibilities.

Responsibilities include managing the preparation, operation, cleaning, repair, and maintenance of the dialysis equipment, including all equipment related to the reverse osmosis system, central delivery system, bicarbonate mixer, and maintenance of logs. Set up/take down the dialysis machine for patient use, including spiking normal saline, priming, checking dialyzer connections, discarding used dialysis lines, and all subsequent steps on the dialysis unit and patient bedside.

Assigns and supervises nursing assistants who perform technical duties related to the dialysis unit. Orders and maintains supplies in the Hospital Dialysis Unit and Pavilion. Maintains all aspects of water quality, including logs in accordance with NYDOH, ESRD and federal guidelines.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees the overall technical operation of the Dialysis Unit, including the Reverse Osmosis Room under the direct supervision of the Chief Technician.
  • Performs required maintenance on machines, as directed.
  • Collects cultures on dialysis equipment, maintains logs, and communicates abnormal results with the Chief Technician, Nurse Manager and Medical Director.
  • Performs disinfection of machines and central delivery system, as directed.
  • Communicates with Baxter for repairs and maintenance, as needed.
  • Performs tests/tasks related to normal dialysis operation and maintains logs daily.
  • Collaborates with the nursing staff to ensure safe and timely dialysis treatments.
  • Attends bi-weekly Renal Dialysis meetings and communicates abnormal test results with the Medical Director, as needed.
  • Supervises nursing assistant staff related to technical duties they have been deemed competent to perform independently.
  • Conducts in-services and educational opportunities, and serves as a resource for all dialysis staff.
Qualifications
  • Required Qualifications: Associate's degree. At least 2 years of general dialysis experience. Excellent interpersonal, communication and written skills. Excellent multi-tasking skills. Works well with others, can work independently, and is motivated to learn and can be flexible.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Biomedical degree. Inpatient Acute care dialysis experience. Chronic dialysis experience. Five or more years of general dialysis experience. Microsoft Office experience. Bonnets, Gambro Phoenix, Prisma-flex and/or Water Treatment certifications.
