Position Summary

Nursing Station Clerks 1 are assigned to either inpatient or outpatient units where there is daily contact with patients. This team member greets visitors and directs them to appropriate locations; answers telephones; performs data entry activities; maintains daily and clinical logs; prepares, updates, and maintains patient charts and files; fills out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions; mails patient letters; and delivers supplies and records to an assigned unit.

Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, knowledge and understanding of patient care, and the ability to respond to changing patient needs by making decisions based on ethical principles and our high standard of excellence.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title. Agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary to permanent non-competitive with the official probationary period beginning.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that non-competitive employment status will be converted to competitive status without an examination. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may participate in promotion examinations for which they are qualified.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $xxx - $xxx / year. The specific offer will be based on validated years of comparable experience. Any attempts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification or termination if hired.

Some positions offer annual supplemental pay such as:

• Location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full-time positions ($4000)
• Inconvenience pay/supplemental shift differential ($575)
• Geographic Pay ($000)

Your total compensation goes beyond the base pay and includes generous leave, health plans, and a state pension.

• Orient patient and/or family to unit, provide general information regarding the room, unit and hospital, and serve as a contact person to patients and families.
• Provide information on patient condition within existing policies and direct visitors to appropriate locations.
• Process physicians' orders by recording written orders in charts, kardex, flag sheets, or directly into a computer file after review by a Registered Nurse; fill out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions.
• Receive new admissions.
• Prepare and maintain patient charts, daily log, and clinic log.

Eligible List Appointment: Candidates must be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for Nursing Station Clerk 1. A canvass letter may be sent to eligible candidates who then must complete and return it as instructed.

Provisional Appointment: In the absence of an eligible list with three or more candidates, a temporary provisional appointment may be considered. Requirements: one year of full-time clerical (in a health care setting), secretarial (in a health care setting), or patient care experience. Provisional candidates must take the examination for Nursing Station Clerk 1 when next offered and be reachable on the resulting eligible list to maintain employment.

55b/c Appointment: Eligible for 55b/c designation and must possess a current 55b/c eligibility letter.

Section 70.1 Transfer: One year of permanent competitive service in a title approved for transfer to Nursing Station Clerk 1.

This position may be designated 55 b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility.
