Overview
Position Summary Phlebotomists collect blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients while adhering to established protocols to ensure proper sample collection and patient safety. They transport blood specimens to laboratory departments, in accordance with proper procedures for such transport and handling. In addition, they conduct in-service education programs relating to theories and techniques of phlebotomy, and perform related clerical work.
Responsibilities- Collect blood specimens from patients through venipuncture, capillary puncture techniques, and/or incision on the patient's arm.
- Provide phlebotomy services to patients in various inpatient, outpatient and offsite areas, following physician orders.
- Enter data concerning blood specimens into a computer database; maintain appointment schedules and logs of patients seen and tests obtained; record results and file them appropriately; keep work-related statistics and perform related clerical duties.
- Supervise, teach, and provide support to medical technology students in phlebotomy by designing and implementing programs of instruction while ensuring adherence to established protocols and patient safety.
- Attend and/or present related hospital in-service programs.
- Maintain proper inventory of supplies and materials needed for daily collection of blood specimens.
- Participate in the overall function of the laboratory by occasionally substituting to other shifts or working prolonged shifts.
- Performs other related duties as required or directed.
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent and one year of experience as a Phlebotomist or a certificate in Phlebotomy from a recognized college, school, training program, hospital, health care facility, or the Armed Services.
- Preferred: Prior hospital/lab experience and basic understanding of medical laboratory technology.

- This position may require wearing respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.
- This function/position may be designated as “essential.” This means that when the Hospital is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or report to work to protect and continue operations.
- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the institution's Employee Health Services.
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references.
- Successfully complete a 4-panel drug screen.
- Meet regulatory requirements for pre-employment screenings.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
Posting and Salary- Posting Overview:
