Clinical Laboratory Technologist II-IV -Blood Bank - Evening Shift

Overview

At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist is a valuable member of our team, providing clinical services to our patient population. • Perform routine test analysis in the Blood Bank environment and adhere to departmental policies and protocols.
• Apply detailed specialized knowledge of scientific principles to perform advanced level testing in general and specific areas in Blood Bank, including identification of atypical serum antibodies, analysis of incompatibility, and transfusion reaction studies; generate all necessary reports.
• Perform and understand quality control procedures; ensure reagents and equipment meet quality standards.
• Review the accuracy of final reports and verify computer print-outs where applicable; implement new test procedures or equipment under supervision.
• Recognize laboratory problems, identify causes, and take corrective action per laboratory protocol; notify supervisor as needed.
• Assist supervising staff in teaching medical technology students and others in laboratory theory and technique.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the field to perform normal duties described in this job description.
• Maintain knowledge of standards and regulations applicable to this position (FDA, NYS Department of Health, and other authorities).
• Maintain and conduct safe laboratory practices as required by NYS Department of Health and OSHA.
• Understand and utilize computer systems applicable to the department, including basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
• May fill in for the shift supervisor and understand administrative policies and procedures to perform substitute supervisory functions.
• Under the direction of the shift supervisor, perform emergency test procedures required in life-threatening situations and, if needed, initiate the Blood Bank Disaster plan in the absence of the supervisor.

Required:

• SL-1: NYS licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or documented eligibility (including provisional/limited permit) with 0-2 years relevant experience.
• SL-2: NYS licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or documented eligibility (including provisional/limited permit) with 3-5 years relevant experience.
• SL-3: NYS licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or documented eligibility (including provisional/limited permit) with minimum 6 years relevant experience.

Preferred: MT (ASCP) Certification or equivalent; additional Blood Bank experience; familiarity with Mediware Hemocare and/or Well Sky Transfusion; experience in automated Blood Bank systems including Immucor Galileo/Galileo Echo.
