OverviewAt Stony Brook Medicine, our Dialysis Technician is a critical member of the team who maintains the environment, including water treatment and equipment according to SBUH, Manufacturer, DOH, CMS, JC and AAMI specifications. The technician repairs and maintains equipment, oversees nursing assistants related to their technical role, and collaborates with nursing staff on technical operations of the unit. The role works with other departments for daily operation and interacts with Medical, Nursing and Technical staff.
The position manages inventory of dialysis supplies and equipment in multiple locations and has overnight and Sunday on-call responsibilities.
- Manage the preparation, operation, cleaning, repair, and maintenance of dialysis equipment, including equipment related to the reverse osmosis system, central delivery system, and bicarbonate mixer; maintain logs.
- Set up/take down dialysis machines for patient use (including spiking saline, priming, checking dialyzer connections, discarding used lines) and perform subsequent steps on the dialysis unit and at patient bedside.
- Assign and supervise nursing assistants performing technical duties related to the dialysis unit's operations.
- Order and maintain supplies for the Hospital Dialysis Unit and the Pavilion; maintain all aspects of water quality and logs in accordance with NYDOH, ESRD and federal guidelines.
- Oversee the overall technical operation of the Dialysis Unit, including the Reverse Osmosis Room under the Chief Technician's supervision.
- Perform required maintenance on machines as directed; collect cultures on dialysis equipment, maintain logs, and communicate abnormal results with leadership and Medical staff.
- Disinfect machines and central delivery system; communicate with Baxter for repairs and maintenance as needed.
- Perform tests/tasks related to normal dialysis operation and maintain logs daily; collaborate with nursing staff to ensure safe and timely dialysis treatments.
- Attend bi-weekly Renal Dialysis meetings and communicate abnormal test results with Medical Director as needed.
- Supervise nursing assistant staff deemed competent to perform technical duties; conduct in-services and educational opportunities as a resource for dialysis staff.
This position may require work in various environments (Towers, Pavilion, Acute Dialysis Unit, Small Technician Lab). Candidate must be able to move dialysis machines and portable RO machines and lift a minimum of 70 pounds.
This is a temporary position that may end at any time.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
Associate's degree. At least 2 years of general dialysis experience. Excellent interpersonal, communication and written skills. Excellent multi-tasking abilities.
Ability to work with others, independently, and be motivated to learn and flexible.

Preferred QualificationsBiomedical degree;
Inpatient Acute care dialysis experience;
Chronic dialysis experience;
Five or more years of general dialysis experience;
Microsoft Office experience;
Bonnet, Gambro Phoenix, Prisma-flex and/or Water Treatment certifications.
