Shift Supervisor Blood Bank - Day Shift
At Stony Brook Medicine, the Shift Supervisor in the Blood Bank is responsible for supervising laboratory technologists, providing technical support, and ensuring compliance with quality standards. The Shift Supervisor performs normal supervisory duties, such as work assignment and scheduling, stands in for the Associate Technical Director in absence, and is the technical resource for the Blood Bank.
Responsibilities- Monitor and maintain the functionality of the Blood Bank Laboratory Information System (Well Sky Transfusion) to meet regulatory requirements and support integration with the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Assist with the interface of Well Sky Transfusion with the EMR for order entry and result review.
- Assist in the development and implementation of new screens and procedures in the Blood Bank LIS.
- Audit and analyze patient billing in the Blood Bank LIS, liaise with Patient Accounting and Hospital IT, and make necessary credits/debits to patient accounts.
- Manage and order laboratory supplies and reagents, review and approve standing orders, and review invoices for payment.
- Research, investigate, distribute, and respond to blood and blood product recall notifications.
- Prepare staff evaluations and performance programs as needed.
- Complete and maintain Blood Bank statistical reports.
- Respond to time‑sensitive critical requests and communicate with other hospital departments in the absence of the Associate Technical Director.
- Maintain accurate filing and record‑keeping, supervise inventory process, and coordinate with BB staff and suppliers.
- Ensure all Blood Bank protocols and procedures are adhered to and interpret them as needed to prioritize patient safety.
- Make decisions in emergency situations when consultation with the Associate Technical Director or Chief, Blood Services is not possible.
- Recommend reagent purchases, troubleshoot reagent problems, and evaluate new methodologies.
- Coordinate review of exception reports and initiate corrective actions.
- Provide supervision during the absence of the assigned Lead Tech, including work assignments and scheduling.
- Maintain knowledge of safe laboratory practices and safety protocols as required by NYSDOH and other regulatory bodies.
- Prepare the Blood Bank laboratory for evaluations, inspections, and accreditations.
- Undergo specialized training on complex automated laboratory instrumentation, including theory, mechanics, operational maintenance, troubleshooting, emergency repair, and staff training.
- Adhere to acceptable time and attendance practices and promote them among staff.
- Identify, document, communicate, and initiate corrective action for deviations from department policies and procedures.
- Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory sciences or equivalent.
- Minimum of 12 years’ experience as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in a tertiary care Blood Bank setting in a supervisory capacity.
- Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
- NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technologist License; BB (ASCP) certification required.
- Experience with BB LIS/EMR integration and automated Blood Bank test platforms.
- SBB (ASCP) certification.
The salary range for this position is $111,350 - $141,219 per year, with additional supplemental pay such as location pay, shift differential, and geographic pay. Benefits include generous leave, health plans, and a state pension.
