Job Description - Plant Utilities Engineer 1 - HSC & EC Plant Operations (FT Evening) (2600366)
Position SummaryA Plant Utilities Engineer 1 operates, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, tests, and calibrates mechanical and electrical equipment in heating and air‑conditioning plants, single or multi‑building facilities to provide heat, hot water, ventilation, air‑conditioning and electrical distribution efficiently and safely. Incumbents recommend major overhauls and equipment replacement and initiate energy conservation projects.
Duties- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, test, and calibrate mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, hot water, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical distribution safely and efficiently.
- Make recommendations on major overuls and replacement of equipment and identify, recommend, and develop energy conservation projects.
- May supervise subordinate staff in the operation and maintenance of heating facilities and mechanical equipment.
- May also supervise contractors in an emergency or project situation and may be required to assume responsibility for operation of the overall physical plant.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Graduate of heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force.
- Enlisted machinery technician (MK) or possession of a certificate as a Marine Engineer issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
- Enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army.
- Enlisted gas turbine systems technician, submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator reactor control, utilities man, machinist mate, or engine man with the U.S. Navy.
- Merchant mariner's document (MMD) and qualified member of the engine department (QMED) as an oiler, fireman/water tender, refrigerating engineer or engine man with the U.S. Merchant Marine.
- Completion of a NYS Department of Labor apprenticeship program for stationary engineers or for plant maintenance (plumber/steamfitter), HVAC Mechanic or plant maintenance (refrigeration/AC).
- Completion of a high‑pressure boiler operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License.
- Associate's degree in HVAC from an accredited college.
- Bachelor's degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical or Marine Engineering.
- Four years or more of full‑time hands‑on experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facility, digital energy platforms and building analytics and/or diagnosis, repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment.
- Four years or more of full‑time hands‑on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment.
- Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program (900 hours) or completion of an approved certificate in HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, boiler operations and maintenance, plumbing from an accredited technical school or technology college.
Valid NYS driver's license. Experience in a hospital/healthcare setting.
Pre‑Employment Requirements- Successfully complete pre‑employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services.
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references.
- Successfully complete a 4‑panel drug screen.
- Meet regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
