Education Specialist

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Education or related fields.
  • Five [5] years of full-time progressive experience in direct student services in higher education.
  • Experience in academic advisement or education counseling.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Education or related fields.
  • Experience with academic advisement, coaching, or educational counseling in higher education, medical school, or health science related institutions.
  • Experience with academic requirements in medical education.
  • Working knowledge of educational theory (adult learning theory, teaching and learning practices).
  • Experience in diagnosing and evaluating learning needs.
Brief Description of Duties

The RSOM Education Specialist combines expertise in educational theory and a strong interest in working with medical students at all levels to provide direct support services, including academic counseling and learning strategies instruction. General areas of counseling and instruction include active learning strategies, self-directed learning, time management, goal-setting, critical thinking, problem-solving, test-taking, board exam preparation, match enhancement, and related topics. The ideal candidate will have a curriculum vitae demonstrating professional competency in using different pedagogical approaches and instructional techniques.

Duties
  • Work with students to create an individualized learning strategy enhancement plan with the goal of optimizing student learning outcomes.
  • Utilize relevant learning tools and current resources to enhance student performance on NBME and USMLE Board exams.
  • Provide educational counseling and coaching to RSOM students to assist in enhancing academic performance.
  • Promote autonomy, encourage help-seeking behaviors, and refer to specific university/college resources as appropriate.
  • Serve as a liaison to connect students with University/campus resources (SASC; CAPS; Peer Mentoring/Tutoring) as needed.
  • Document and maintain accurate records of student consults and communications according to the University and RSOM policies and in compliance with FERPA.
  • Provide proactive outreach and individualized support for diverse cohorts of students with unique needs; remain sensitive to learners who may be at‑risk academically.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs as a member of the academic support team (i.e., attend meetings, monitor progress, practice ongoing evaluation and enhancement of program initiatives).
  • Cofacilitate recruitment and selection processes for peer mentoring and tutoring programs.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
