This post has been created to manage the increasing demand on the glaucoma service. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the existing glaucoma team to deliver a high quality and timely service to the local population. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to shape and contribute to the development of the service they will also work closely with the current team of consultant colleagues and participate in a 1 in 10 (both weekday and weekend) on call rota.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to the general ophthalmic and cataract service and flexibility is required to meet the department's service commitment to delivery of efficient, safe and high‑quality patient care.
The post holder must have sub‑speciality training in Glaucoma. Applicants will be required to have completed a substantial number of specialist glaucoma procedures and will be expected to have an excellent clinical quality record and be able to demonstrate the ability to run the service efficiently as well as demonstrate competency in performing specialist procedures independently in theatre.
Main duties of the jobThe successful applicant will participate in outpatient activity leading and managing both specialist glaucoma and general ophthalmology clinics, be involved in preoperative management prior to surgery, and in all aspects of the operative care of the patients. It is anticipated that the surgeon will spend the equivalent of at two sessions in the operating theatre and three/four sessions a week in outpatient clinic in addition to administrative, management, clinical governance and supporting professional activity duties.
S/he will work closely with clinical colleague, nursing and other allied health care staff in order to enhance the level of patient care at the Trust.
The final allocation of patient contact time, including theatre and clinics will be agreed in discussion with the Clinical Director.
