Job Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented Civil Engineer with a strong background in site development, specifically focused on grading and paving operations. You will be responsible for designing and overseeing the "ground-up" phase of projects—transforming raw land into a build-ready site through precise elevation control, drainage design, and high-quality pavement engineering.
Key Responsibilities
1. Grading & Earthwork Design
Develop comprehensive grading plans that establish finished floor elevations, slopes, and contours.
Calculate cut-and-fill volumes to optimize earthwork costs and site efficiency.
Design stormwater management systems (swales, retention ponds, and inlets) to prevent erosion and ensure proper drainage away from structures.
2. Pavement & Infrastructure Engineering
Design pavement sections (asphalt or concrete) based on expected traffic loads, soil stability, and geotechnical reports.
Specify materials for sub-base, base, and surface layers to ensure long-term durability.
Coordinate the layout of curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and ADA-compliant ramps.
3. Project Oversight & Compliance
Review geotechnical and topographical surveys to inform design decisions.
Prepare and submit permit packages to local, state, and federal agencies.
Conduct on-site inspections during rough and fine grading to ensure contractors are meeting design specifications.
Manage the quality control of paving materials (e.g., testing asphalt density or concrete slump).
Required Skills & Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
Licensure: EIT (Engineer-In-Training) required; PE (Professional Engineer) license preferred.
Technical Software: Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D (specifically for grading/corridor modeling) and hydrology/hydraulics software (e.g., HEC-RAS or Storm
CAD).Field Knowledge: Strong understanding of heavy equipment capabilities (graders, dozers, pavers) and soil compaction techniques.
Regulatory Knowledge: Deep familiarity with local building codes, ADA standards, and NPDES (erosion control) requirements.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
Ability to work in an office setting and spend significant time on active construction sites.
Ability to navigate uneven terrain and work in various weather conditions.
