JOB PURPOSE: The APP Fellow will work within a Critical Care team under the direction of an APP and a Physician to provide comprehensive and consistent care for critically ill patients in a hospital setting. The Fellow will gain experience in assessing, diagnosing, and managing care, selecting interventions, performing required procedures, and consistently evaluating patients’ progress toward medical goals.

Minimum

Education Required:

Graduate of an approved Physician Assistant Program or graduate of an approved Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program.

Minimum Experience

Required:

None.

Minimum Licensure/Certification Required By Law: Current or eligible for Georgia state licensure. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification required.

Additional Qualifications: Highly motivated new graduates are welcome. During the fellowship, one must be able to rotate between night and day shifts as required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides direct clinical services for critically ill adult patients with cardiac or multi‑system failure, within institutional guidelines and utilizing evidence‑based clinical practice standards under the supervision of a physician.
  • Obtains patient health histories and completes physical examinations, and documents findings in accordance with hospital requirements.
  • Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests, explaining the necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated effects of procedures to patients, families, staff, and learners.
  • Performs approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures based on the patient’s clinical status and documents procedures per hospital requirements; assists physicians with procedures.
  • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and external cardiac massage; manages airway including bag‑mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation and extubation; orders life‑supporting drugs and defibrillation per Advanced Cardiac Life Support protocols.
  • May perform thoracentesis, thoracostomy tube, and bronchoscopy, as well as other indicated procedures under direct supervision until independent competency is confirmed.
  • Under physician direction and credentialing standards, inserts and manages arterial catheters, central venous catheters, pulmonary artery catheters, chest tubes, thoracenteses, endotracheal tubes, and extra‑glottic devices; inspects and educates others on equipment use.
  • Formulates and implements a treatment plan for acute illness management in collaboration with attending physicians and documents in medical records and narrative summaries.
  • Assesses patients for changes in status and initiates appropriate interventions, including emergency stabilization measures.
  • Incorporates clinical research findings to develop and implement standards of care.
  • Supports IRB‑approved clinical research/trials through consent, diagnostics, therapeutic interventions, and reporting of outcomes, including adverse events.
  • Participates in quality and performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Serves as a clinical expert and education consultant to nursing, other team members, and the larger community.
  • Identifies educational needs of family members and provides teaching opportunities.
  • Assesses educational needs, plans, provides, and evaluates educational programs for nursing staff, interdisciplinary health teams, and the community.
  • Other duties as assigned.
