Compensation
  • Room Benefits:
    All halls except for suites – receive a single room waiver contingent upon contract term budget approval. Suites assignments provide a waiver for a single occupant bedroom.
  • Full waiver of each semester’s meal plan fees, as specified by Housing and Residence Life.
  • A stipend of $500 per semester for the first two semesters of service as an RA, increasing to $550 per semester thereafter.
Hours

Students may work a maximum of 25 hours per week total during academic semesters.

General Function and Scope of Responsibility

The Resident Assistant is a part‑time student employee who lives on each floor within the residence halls. The RA promotes individual success through community development on floors ranging from 45–70 residents. Responsibilities include attending training, opening/closing halls, serving as desk receptionist, programming for student development and wellness, providing campus resources, acting as a contact and referral source for student concerns, ensuring hall security, observing student conduct, intervening, and reporting incidents.

The position is part‑time in conjunction with the employee’s full‑time academic schedule, requiring an average of 20 hours per week during the academic year.

Academic Mission Support
  • Assist in developing an academic environment and communicate academic support services to students.
  • Model appropriate study skills and academic interests.
  • Be aware of and communicate available academic support services.
  • Engage students regularly regarding academic and career development progress.
Wellness Lifestyle Support
  • Educate students about community development through programming efforts.
  • Assist students in understanding how personal lifestyle choices affect floor community health.
Programming
  • Plan, develop, and initiate social and educational programs as directed by the Residence Hall Director.
  • Assess residents’ needs for academic success programming.
  • Assist staff in formulating residence hall programming strategies and encourage student ideas.
  • Support and attend hall activities and events, including duty and staff meetings.
  • May drive university vehicles to transport students to events and activities.
Administration
  • Complete room condition reports and inventories.
  • Report problems and initiate maintenance requests.
  • Assist with staff selection as requested.
  • Work the front desk four hours per week.
  • Assist with room changes, single room assignments, and inspections.
  • Maintain inventory of common area furnishings.
  • Communicate regularly with the Residence Hall Director and attend all weekly meetings.
Dealing with Inappropriate Behavior
  • Confront individuals or groups violating policies and report accordingly.
  • Enforce rules consistently and fairly.
  • Provide residents with a rationale for university and residence hall regulations.
  • Serve in an oversight capacity in university dining facilities.
  • Perform duty rounds as scheduled.
Development of Staff Relations
  • Communicate openly and honestly with staff.
  • Participate actively in meetings, training, and activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding job‑related information.
  • Support decisions of Housing and Residence Life and other staff.
Facilitation of Community Development
  • Help students adjust to residence hall and university life.
  • Maintain an open, respectful relationship with floor residents.
  • Support resident involvement in program board and campus activities.
  • Encourage academic achievement and its importance to community development.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Serve as Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act, complete required training, and report crimes.
  • Report incidents of sexual assault and other gender‑based discrimination to the appropriate offices.
