SEN Teaching Assistant - Complex Needs & Community Support (KS4 Focus)
Full-time Term-time Stevenage
Are you passionate about supporting young people who face barriers to learning? We are looking for a resilient, proactive, and relationship-driven SEN Teaching Assistant to work with students with complex needs both on site and within the community in the Stevenage area.

About the Role
You will play a key role in supporting students in a range of environments, including off-site locations, alternative learning spaces, and community-based activities. The setting offers a broad, ambitious, and personalised curriculum, with a strong focus on emotional readiness, life skills, therapeutic support, wellbeing, and preparation for adulthood.
Key Responsibilities
- Support students with complex learning, behavioural, and social needs on site and within the community.
- Deliver personalised 1:1 or small-group sessions, particularly for KS4 students.
- Engage and motivate reluctant learners using flexible, creative, and practical strategies.
- Promote emotional regulation, wellbeing, and resilience.
- Support students' personal development, independence, and life skills.
- Work closely with teachers, SENCO, pastoral staff, and external agencies.
- Maintain high standards of safeguarding, behaviour, and consistency across all environments.
Essential Criteria
1. Driving & Community Engagement
- Full, clean driving licence and confidence driving for work duties.
- Willingness to support students in off-site or community learning settings.
- Strong initiative and independence when working outside the classroom environment.
2. Experience Supporting Students with Complex Needs
- Experience supporting children or young people with a range of complex needs.
- Ability to build strong, consistent, and trusting relationships.
- Resilience, patience, and emotional regulation when working with challenging situations.
3. Skills Working with Disengaged KS4 Male Students
- Proven ability to engage KS4 male learners who may be reluctant or withdrawn from education.
- Ability to motivate students using creative, hands-on, or alternative strategies.
- Strong behaviour management rooted in empathy, positive relationships, and clear boundaries.
4. Initiative, Leadership & Teamwork
- Confident delivering 1:1 and group sessions both in school and in the community.
- Able to adapt learning activities and problem-solve independently.
- Strong collaborative approach across multidisciplinary teams.
