The Nuclear Medicine Technologist will primarily perform Cardiac SPECT MPI imaging at Virginia Heart outpatient imaging centers, delivering high-quality diagnostic services across multiple sites, including Arlington and Stone Springs. In addition to SPECT responsibilities, all technologists in this role are required to be cross-trained in Cardiac PET/CT and provide coverage at our PET imaging departments in Falls Church and Leesburg as operationally needed.

Responsibilities
  • SPECT MPI Responsibilities (Primary):
    • Perform high-quality Cardiac SPECT MPI imaging following departmental protocols.
    • Explain SPECT procedures and stress testing to patients and ensure proper preparation.
    • Administer radiopharmaceuticals accurately and safely.
    • Operate gamma camera systems and complete daily quality control.
    • Document procedures, doses, and patient records accurately in the EMR.
    • Prepare, position, and monitor patients safely during the imaging process.
    • Maintain radiation safety documentation and support emergency protocols.
    • Assist with daily setup and shutdown routines, inventory, and scanner readiness.
    • Collaborate with providers, APPs, and team members to ensure smooth workflow.
  • PET/CT Responsibilities (Cross-Trained Coverage):
    • Perform high-quality Cardiac PET/CT studies using Rubidium-82 or FDG radiopharmaceuticals.
    • Explain PET procedures and stress testing to patients and ensure proper preparation.
    • Administer radiopharmaceuticals and monitor stress response during pharmacologic testing.
    • Operate PET/CT scanner, perform daily quality control.
    • Perform diagnostic cardiac CT studies.
    • Document and manage PET studies accurately in EMR, PACS, and processing software.
    • Perform image processing using Cedars, Imagen

      Q, and Fujifilm for quantitative analysis.
    • Assist with glucose monitoring and patient preparation for FDG studies as needed.
    • Follow PET/CT safety and dosing protocols, including aminophylline administration when applicable.
    • Rotate across PET locations and actively participate in workflow coverage and readiness.
    • Engage in protocol development, clinical trials, or performance improvement projects as assigned.
Requirements
  • Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) or ARRT(N) (Required)
  • CT Certification (ARRT CT or NMTCB CT) or willingness to obtain CT Certification within 6 months of hire (Sign-On Bonus awarded upon completion of CT training & licensure)
  • Experience in SPECT MPI imaging (Required)
  • Experience in PET imaging (Preferred) – Cross-training available for nuclear medicine techs who want to transition into PET/CT
  • Experience in cardiac PET (Preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of radiation safety, patient care, and imaging protocols
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Interest in research and professional development
  • Must be willing and flexible to cover multiple locations as needed to support patient care and departmental operations
  • Must have or obtain Virginia state license from Virginia Department of Health Professions to practice in outpatient setting
