Controller; hybrid CFO

Job Title:
Controller (with possible progression to CFO)

Location: Sterling VA (Ideally located in the DC/MD/VA tristate area)

Salary Range: $175,000 - $200,000 (commensurate with experience) plus potential equity

Position Summary

Working for a high growth company this Controller will be responsible for managing the company’s accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance, with a strong focus on federal and state tax matters as well as needing strong GAAP exposure. This role will serve as the primary financial steward of the organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting while supporting strategic decision-making - reporting into and learning from the CFO.

• Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations
• Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Manage federal, state, and local tax compliance, including income, payroll, and sales/use taxes
• Coordinate and prepare tax filings; work with external CPAs and tax advisors as needed
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements
• Lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
• Build out and maintain internal controls and accounting policies
• Support audits, reviews, and financial due diligence as required
• Provide financial analysis and insights to senior leadership to support business decisions
• Improve and streamline accounting processes and systems as the company grows

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• Ideally have some subscription based company exposure (preferred)
• Years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in a Controller or senior accounting role
• Demonstrated experience with federal and state tax compliance and reporting
• Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
• Experience working in a small or mid-sized business environment
• Proficiency with accounting software and Excel
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with leadership
• Competitive salary range of approximately $175,000-$200,000 (depending on experience)
