Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer – Senior to support product development, sustainment, integration and modernization for Department of Homeland Security equipment used at border crossings and airports. This position is located in Sterling, VA.

In this position, the successful candidate will:

  • Design, analyze, test, manufacture, maintain mechanical components and systems, and test equipment.
  • Perform advanced engineering analysis on a variety of mechanical components.
  • Conduct quality control review, data reporting, and write/review technical documents.
  • Apply principles of engineering, physics, and materials science as well as an understanding of core areas including mechanics, kinematics, dynamics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, chemistry, and electricity along with tools like computer‑aided design and product lifecycle management to design and analyze test facilities, industrial equipment, and machinery; heating and cooling systems; transport systems; robotics; and others.
  • Research, plan, design, and develop mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, for test purposes.
Responsibilities
  • Perform complex assignments by compiling and evaluating design and test data, preparing technical specifications, analyzing technical data to determine appropriate limits and variables for product, process or materials specifications.
  • Analyze and interpret data collected.
  • Prepare technical reports and make presentations to client, both formal and informal.
  • Conduct and/or lead small technical projects or phases of technical projects.
  • May provide technical direction to and coordinate the efforts of engineers and technical support staff in the performance of assigned projects within time and budget constraints.
  • Build relationships with internal and external clients and present research results.
  • Communicate with client regarding the schedule and quality of deliverables.
  • Support business development efforts led by others and secure follow‑on work.
  • Oversee, mentor and train lower‑level staff.
  • Prepare engineering drawings and design diagrams.
  • Troubleshoot and prepare equipment for test.
  • Create test procedures, operating instructions, maintenance instructions.
  • Complete assigned project work within schedule and budget constraints.
  • Develop test procedures, collect data and conduct integrated testing.
  • Follow safety, security, quality, configuration management and operating policies and procedures.
Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 5 years of experience or master’s degree in a related field with 2 years of experience or PhD; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in a related field.
  • Experience that demonstrates solving complex technical problems associated with engineering and scientific activities.
  • Ability to follow complex written or oral instructions accurately and efficiently.
  • Highly motivated self‑starters with a strong desire to learn.
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 50lbs, and to stage heavy equipment and test articles.
  • Eligibility and willingness to obtain a Secret Clearance and DHS Suitability.
  • Must be US Citizen.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in one or more of the following technologies:
    License Plate Reader (LPR), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems, digital signage, kiosks, biometrics, mobile technologies, artificial intelligence, IoT, wireless communications, imaging systems, camera analytics, non‑intrusive inspection equipment.
  • Agile development process.
  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Active DHS or CBP Suitability.
