Position Overview

Under the Division of 911, the Telecommunicator Specialist uses a multi-channel trunked radio network system to receive, monitor, and transmit information. The position operates a multi-terminal console configuration with multiple databases and messaging systems to transmit and receive police business and emergency messages between mobile and base stations. The Telecommunicator Specialist answers and acts upon incoming calls (emergency, non-emergency, 9-1-1) from the public and assigns ISP officers to respond to calls for service.

The position also observes security monitors and responds to walk-in requests for service. Excellent communication skills are required.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities
  • Utilize a multi-channel trunked radio network system to receive, monitor, and transmit information.
  • Operate a multi-terminal console configuration with databases and messaging systems to transmit and receive police business and emergency messages between mobile and base stations.
  • Answer and act upon incoming calls, including emergency, non-emergency, and 9-1-1, from the public.
  • Monitor live satellite Doppler Weather System via the National Weather Service and gather information from local police agencies for relay to the National Weather Service via the National Warning System (NAWAS) hotline.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent (four years of high school).
  • Successful completion of the Telecommunicator Trainee Program.
  • Possession of a valid LEADS operator certificate.
  • Successful completion of agency-provided call taker program.
  • Successful completion of specialized training in the operation of a multi-channel trunked radio system.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least six months of Telecommunications experience.
  • Experience using multiple monitors simultaneously.
  • Experience with law enforcement computer systems (e.g., LEADS, CAD, NLETS, NCIC, FOID, CCH) and related terminology.
  • Experience operating a multi-terminal console configuration.
  • Experience obtaining and providing information via telephone or two-way radio.
  • Experience completing training or online courses via computer or web-based systems.
Conditions of Employment
  • Ability to pass an Illinois State Police background check and drug screening.
  • Valid LEADS operator certificate required.
  • Clear speaking voice required.
  • Must be able to work assigned shifts, weekends, and holidays.
