Overview

Position:
Nurse III (Nurse Supervisor) in a correctional setting. Supervises professional nursing care for incarcerated offenders in outpatient clinic, infirmary, or specialized unit settings. May supervise a smaller clinic, a shift within a larger facility, or a specialized clinical treatment unit. May require any shift, weekends, holidays, and nurse on-call or call-back duties.

This position is open to Colorado state residents only. Due to the State's current hiring freeze, this position will not be filled until January 1, 2026, or after, unless a waiver/exemption has been approved.

Responsibilities

The Nurse III (Nurse Supervisor) supervises, guides, and directs professional nursing care for incarcerated offenders in outpatient clinics, infirmaries, or specialized unit settings for acute care, chronic support, and emergency assessment and interventions. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Document medical records accurately and timely (handwritten or electronic)
  • Deliver patient education, including self-care techniques and medication/treatment information
  • Provide patient care tailored to offenders' diagnoses and needs
  • Perform routine and emergency assessments during triage, sickline, and emergencies using nursing skills and protocols
  • Promote safety and security of the clinical environment, including contraband control
  • Payroll, scheduling, Performance Management Plans; oversee shift responsibilities for 8-16 hours per day; coordinate staffing and onboarding; assist in hiring and disciplinary actions
  • Recommends, implements, and monitors policies; functions as on-call supervisor and arranges coverage/overtime
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current, valid RN license from the Colorado Board of Nursing or a state in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC)
  • Three (3) years of full-time RN patient care experience (part-time experience prorated)

Substitutions:

  • A bachelor’s degree in nursing may substitute for one year of experience
  • A master’s or doctorate in nursing may substitute for two years of experience
