Position: Affective Needs Teacher - Elementary

HIRING FOR 2026/2027 SCHOOL YEAR

RE-1 Valley School District is seeking a compassionate, structured, and student-centered Elementary Affective Needs Teacher to support students with significant social-emotional and behavioral needs in grades K-5.

We are looking for an educator skilled in behavior intervention, trauma-informed practices, and individualized instruction who can create a structured, supportive classroom environment while promoting student growth and reintegration into general education settings when appropriate.

Salary Range & Category: $44,000 - $65,853 on Teacher Salary Schedule

FLSA Status:
Exempt

Work Calendar: 167 days

FTE: 1.0

Full‑time with benefits; 4‑day school week (Tuesday – Friday)

Position Summary

The Elementary Affective Needs Teacher provides specialized instruction and behavioral support for students with emotional disabilities or significant affective needs. The teacher develops and implements individualized education and behavior plans while creating a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment that promotes academic growth and social‑emotional development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instruction & Student Support
  • Provide direct academic instruction aligned to IEP goals
  • Develop and implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)
  • Teach self‑regulation, coping strategies, and social skills
  • Support students in accessing grade‑level curriculum
  • Facilitate gradual reintegration into general education settings when appropriate
Case Management & Compliance
  • Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs in compliance with IDEA
  • Facilitate IEP meetings and maintain required documentation
  • Collect and analyze data related to academic and behavioral progress
  • Participate in evaluation and re‑valuation processes
Behavioral & Crisis Support
  • Implement crisis prevention and de‑escalation strategies
  • Maintain a structured classroom environment with clear expectations
  • Collaborate with administrators and support staff during behavioral incidents
  • Follow district protocols regarding safety and restraint procedures
Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborate with general education teachers and support staff
  • Work closely with school counselors, psychologists, and outside mental‑health providers
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding progress and support strategies
  • Supervise and support paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom
Student Safety & Care
  • Follow district protocols for crisis prevention and intervention
  • Maintain a structured, safe, and supportive learning environment
  • Assist students with personal care needs, including hygiene, toileting, feeding, and mobility, as outlined in individual student plans
  • Maintain student dignity, privacy, and confidentiality at all times
  • Follow district health, safety, and training protocols when providing personal care support
Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and IDEA
  • Participate in professional development related to behavioral and emotional support
  • Support building and district improvement goals
  • RE-1 Valley employees shall comply with standard practices and ethical conduct toward information and information technology, students, professional colleagues, school officials, parents, and members of the community, and shall exemplify the highest standards of professional commitment
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Special Education preferred (will be given first consideration)
  • Currently hold a Colorado teaching license or have licensure application in process with appropriate endorsement in Special Education
  • Currently hold a Colorado Substitute Teaching License if Teacher License is not completed
  • Experience working with students with significant behavioral or emotional disabilities preferred
  • Knowledge of IEP development and compliance requirements
  • Experience with functional curriculum and life skills instruction preferred
  • Knowledge of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) systems preferred
  • CPI or crisis intervention training required
  • Experience collaborating with related service providers
  • Experience with trauma‑informed and restorative practices
