Position: CDOC State Teacher I - Part Time Welding Instructor (Sterling )

Overview

This position provides entry-level marketable job skills to inmate students by delivering career and technical welding educational instruction and assessment within an adult educational correctional system/facility. Instruction is in accordance with the Colorado Community College System (CCCS) and/or the Colorado State Licensing Board (if applicable).

Responsibilities / Duties
  • Teaches and mentors inmate students individually or in groups, promoting occupational, academic and transitional performance skills.
  • Determines educational needs of inmate students to develop short and long term goals.
  • Plans course content and develops methods of instruction.
  • Develops and implements competency-based teaching aids such as instructional software, multimedia visual aids, or study materials.
  • Provides hands-on training to teach and demonstrate welding skills, techniques, methods and procedures.
  • Lectures on welding theories, concepts, principles, and terminology.
  • Selects and administers appropriate assessments to inmate students to measure progress and course completion.
  • Ensures security, supervision and monitoring of inmate students and proper handling of tools, equipment, and hazardous materials in accordance with CDOC regulations; ensures tools and equipment are in proper working condition.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records such as grades, attendance rosters, and training activity details.
  • Observes and evaluates inmate students’ work to determine progress and provide feedback; documents vocational achievements and contact hours toward certificate requirements.
  • Participates in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to stay current in the field and integrates relevant information into training programs.
  • Actively contributes to safety and security of the facility through inmate management and promoting conflict resolution.
  • Encourages critical thinking, self-discipline and motivation for inmate students to support reintegration into society.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Safety & Security

Maintain safety and security by training inmates; may perform inmate counts, searches, escorts and movement control in emergent situations. Adhere to agency regulations and codes of discipline to promote a safe work environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Option A: Associate’s Degree in welding or related field and 4,000 hours of verified occupational welding experience within the last seven years (CCCS requirements). There is no substitution for the 4,000 hours.

Option B: Substitution #1 – A current State of Colorado/national/industry/military/union license or certification in the welding field plus 4,000 hours of verified occupational experience within the last seven years (no substitution for the 4,000 hours).

Option C: Substitution #2 – Bachelor’s Degree in welding or related field plus 2,000 hours of verified occupational welding experience within the last seven years (no substitution for the 2,000 hours).

Paid and/or unpaid experience must be in the occupational field and does not count teaching experience.

Post-Qualification Conditions
  • Must obtain a CCCS post-secondary credential in welding within six months of hire.
  • Must obtain a Colorado Community College Professional Teacher Credential within three years of hire and maintain it for the duration of employment.
  • Transcripts must be attached to the application to receive college credit; must be in pdf or jpg format.
