Special Education Teacher

Reports To:

Campus Principal

Position Overview:

The Special Education Teacher will assist the General Education Teacher in implementing IEPs, providing accommodation for students, and providing additional academic support and/or tutoring to identify special education students. The Teacher will serve as a case manager for all students with IEPs and actively participate in all ARD meetings.

Skills:

* Working knowledge of characteristics of students with Emotional Disturbance, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Specific Learning Disabilities (including, but not limited to, Dyslexia)

* Working knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to special education.

* Working knowledge of learning styles and modalities and ability to implement appropriate teaching strategies to meet individual student needs.

* Ability to effectively integrate technology into daily lesson plans.

* Ability to implement effective behavior management techniques.

* Ability to successfully complete the required training involving hands-on management.

* The ability to consistently provide student safety, including maintaining personal or specifically assigned (staff) line-of-sight supervision for every student.

* Exceptional communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.

* Ability to effectively utilize and supervise paraprofessionals.

* Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously. Shifting focus as needed.

* Ability to maintain complete confidentiality.

* Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

* Understanding of positive behavioral management techniques

* Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

* Ability to respectfully and effectively work with students, school staff, residential staff, and visitors, regardless of gender. Age, disability, or ethnicity

* Ability to maintain a current Texas driver's license with an excellent driving record

Responsibilities & Duties:

* Prepare daily lesson plans, including technology integration, and submit them to the principal weekly.

* Review and be familiar with IEPs and other student information for all assigned students

* Teach according to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards, individualize to meet IEP requirements and students.

* Use formal and informal assessments and student portfolios to assess and document student progress.

* Maintain appropriate supervision of students and classroom staff.

* Use behavioral interventions to assist in maintaining

* Maintain records of student attendance and grades.

* Prepare and submit report cards and IEP progress reports in a timely manner

* Provide needed information and assist with the development of FBAs and BIPs.

* Maintain a neat, clean, and orderly classroom.

* Present current student work, without last names, to the general education teacher for display in the classroom,

* Serve as a role model for students and classroom staff about language, dress, and behavior.

* Maintain current knowledge of and abide by all state regulations and TCS policies for teachers.

* Ensure necessary and reasonable measures are taken to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.

* Work cooperatively with other TCS staff, parents, and surrogates, as needed.

* Enriching job skills through professional development activities

* Actively participate in faculty and/or staff meetings and assist in school committees as needed

* Other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:

* Maintain emotional control under stress

* Work with frequent interruptions

* Occasional district-wide travel

* Frequent prolonged and irregular hours

* Sitting, standing, lifting, and carrying (up to 25 pounds with assistance), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, and kneeling may be required.

Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (Master's Preferred)

* Texas Special Education Certification. (Required)

* Minimum of one year's experience as a classroom teacher, working with ED and/or LD students preferred.

* CPI certification (or ability to acquire in 2 months)
