Student Justice Centre Peer Assistant
within the Human Rights and Equity (HRE) Office
Anticipated start date: August 31st, 2026

The Student Justice Centre is a part of the Human Rights and Equity (HRE) Office at Brock University. HRE is a resource for all Brock community members, which includes students, staff, and faculty. HRE addresses human rights, harassment, and discrimination that is connected to the Ontario Human Rights Code. The Student Justice Centre at Brock University seeks five (5) peer assistants to join our team to empower students to become agents of positive change within their communities and beyond. The SJC Peer Assistants will provide a welcoming and safe space for students to gather, connect with like-minded individuals, and engage in social and political discussions, education, and activism. Peer assistants will be offered a 35-week contract of 10-12 hrs/week from August 2026through April 2027 at Brock University's main campus in St.

Catharines.

Successful candidates are expected to be available for in-person program delivery (workshops,drop-insand events) at the St. Catharines campus. Some evenings and weekends will be required. Team members will report to and work daily with their supervisor, the Student Justice Coordinator.

Duties & Responsibilities

All team members will be involved in the following areas of work:

Develop and Deliver Social Justice Programming

  • Work with other advocacy teams to create and deliver well-rounded workshops, events, and opportunities to support students on campus and in local high schools.
  • Identify areas where social justice programming is needed, considering the concerns and needs of the student population.
  • Design and deliver workshops, events, and campaigns that engage students in critical dialogue and action around issues of social justice.
  • Design social media posts, posters and banners for event and workshop promotion.
  • Collaborate with other SJC staff members to ensure programming is well-rounded and addresses various issues related to racism, colonialism, transphobia, homophobia, ableism, Anti-Islamophobia, antisemitism, xenophobia, classism, sexism, implicit bias and more.
  • Coordinate logistics such as space, materials, and outreach to ensure successful delivery of programming.
  • Support general HRE events and programming.
  • Staff Drop-In and Provide Support Services

  • Staff SJC Drop-Ins hours to provide support and advocacy to students.
  • Serve as an initial point of contact for students, offering supportive listening, providing information about options, and facilitating warm referrals to HRE Advisors and other appropriate on- and off-campus resources.
