Non-Verbal Communication
Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds.
- Employees who do NOT hold a 4‑year honours degree or a 3‑year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate – $22.07 per hour (Rate effective September 1, 2024).
- Employees who hold a 4‑year honours degree or a 3‑year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate – $34.73 per hour (Rate effective September 1, 2024).
- In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant’s duties, these hours shall be compensated at the appropriate Teaching Assistant rate.
The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement. These are made up of scheduled contact time with students and non‑classroom time (including preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required).
Qualifications- An Honours BA in Communication Studies, or an equivalent program, is required.
- Candidates must have completed the course in question, or a university‑level equivalent, with a minimum final grade of 75%. If seeking consideration for an equivalency, the candidate must identify the course and supply two documents: (1) a copy of the course outline and (2) the candidate’s transcript showing the course and grade. Failure to provide one or both documents will result in an incomplete application.
- Candidates must provide evidence of strong writing skills (e.g., university‑level papers, relevant awards, or publications).
- Candidates must have strong interpersonal and group communication skills.
- Candidates must demonstrate professionalism when supporting course content, leading seminars, and meeting deadlines.

As per Article 22.04 of the Collective Agreement:- Part‑time Graduate Students and Non‑Students shall not accept any appointment which, taken together with all other appointments at the University, would cause the member to exceed the maximum number of regular hours (i.e. not overtime hours) allowable in a work week under the Employment Standards Act, as amended from time to time.
