Position FunctionThe Intermittent Campus Transit Bus Operator Trainee is responsible for providing support to the Transportation Department by being actively engaged in the training required to meet the qualifications of the Campus Transit Bus Operator within a five‑week period. Selected trainees are expected to meet all training requirements and after the successful completion of the five‑week training period, trainees will be immediately placed in either an intermittent worker, student worker or full‑time (9‑month or 12‑month) driver position.
Employees hired into Intermittent positions are limited to working no more than 720 hours per fiscal year.
Responsibilities- Meet all training requirements needed in Phase I and II of the Certification process outlined in the Campus Transit Bus Operator Training Program to successfully assume the position of Campus Transit Bus Driver at Mississippi State University.
- Attend all unit meetings and scheduled training; be expeditious, use time wisely.
- Position is required to work scheduled overtime to cover University events.
- As a trainee, ask questions; do not make assumptions when unsure; take advantage of the resources you have within your management team.
- Report for work on time, alert, and fit for duty.
- Actively engaging in study and training required to pass all testing and demonstrations presented to meet Certification of CDL requirements.
- Develop strong working relationships with coworkers; work collaboratively to create an environment conducive to professionalism and teamwork.
- Carry out all work assignments as requested, working within the timelines provided.
- Adhere to all university policies, procedures, and safety work rules.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent General Studies. - Experience:
3 years continuous work history. Successful drug and alcohol screens required. - History that establishes consistency in application of work.
- Job‑related work experience desired.
- Some post‑secondary education, training in job‑related skills.
- Ability to read, write and understand general work instructions.
- Working knowledge of road signs and driving procedures.
- Ability to analyze problems and make ethical decisions for resolution.
- Demonstrated strong work ethic and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and interactive skills with the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community.
- Ability to work proficiently with constituents and general public.
- Ability to plan, organize, and manage time for meeting assigned scheduling targets.
Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc. Work schedules, volume of work, or priorities seldom change; able to anticipate new work; minimum distractions or interruptions; seldom involves conflicting demands on time.
Job frequently requires sitting, reaching, climbing or balancing, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
Job occasionally requires standing, walking, and lifting up to 10 pounds.
Vision requirements:
Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
