Organization Overview

The Stamford Museum & Nature Center (SM&NC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of art, nature, and history. Situated on a 118-acre campus, the SM&NC offers a unique and diverse experience for visitors of all ages. As the SM&NC approaches its 90th anniversary our mission continues to be to “educate, entertain, and enrich the community through a deep appreciation for the arts, natural sciences, and cultural history.”

We achieve this by operating a museum, a working farm, an environmental education center, a planetarium and observatory, a preschool, and extensive grounds with hiking trails. The SM&NC is a beloved community institution, serving as a hub for education, recreation, and cultural engagement.

Position Summary

The Executive Director is the leader of the Stamford Museum & Nature Center, responsible for the overall strategic, operational, and financial success of the organization. The Executive Director works in close partnership with the Board of Directors to set the vision and direction for the SM&NC, ensuring its long‑term sustainability and continued relevance to the community. This individual will be a passionate advocate for the SM&NC’s mission, a dynamic leader, and a skilled fundraiser and communicator.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong business acumen, a deep appreciation for the arts and sciences, and a proven track record of leading a complex organization. The ideal candidate will inspire and motivate staff, volunteers and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership:

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and execute a compelling strategic plan that ensures the SM&NC’s growth, impact, and financial stability.
  • Provide visionary leadership to the staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
  • Serve as the primary public face of the SM&NC, acting as a passionate advocate and ambassador for its mission.

Fundraising and Financial Management:

  • Lead all fundraising efforts, including major gift solicitations, grant applications, corporate sponsor ships, and membership campaigns.
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with donors, foundations, and community leaders.
  • Oversee the development of the annual budget and ensure responsible fiscal management.
  • Work with the finance committee to monitor financial performance and maintain the long‑term financial health of the organization.

Operational Management:

  • Oversee all aspects of the SM&NC’s operations.
  • Ensure the highest standards of safety, security, and visitor experience are met across all areas of the campus.
  • Lead, mentor, and motivate a talented and diverse team of professionals, fostering a positive and productive work environment.

Community Engagement and Partnerships:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community stakeholders, including local government officials, school districts, and other cultural institutions.
  • Expand the SM&NC’s reach and impact through innovative programming and strategic partnerships.
  • Ensure that the SM&NC is a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible resource for all members of the community.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years of senior leadership experience, preferably within a museum, cultural institution, or a nonprofit organization of similar size and complexity.
  • Proven track record in fundraising, including experience securing major gifts and grants.
  • Exceptional communication and public speaking, with the ability to inspire and engage a wide range of audiences.
  • Strong financial management skills, including experience in budget development.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a diverse team of professionals.
  • A passion for the mission of the Stamford Museum & Nature Center, with a deep appreciation for the arts, sciences, and cultural history.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in a relevant field (e.g., arts administration, nonprofit management, business administration) is highly desirable.

The salary range for this role is $175,000 – $225,000. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
