Overview

Job Description Stamford Health has an opportunity for a full-time Surgical Tech on our Labor & Delivery team! Under direct supervision of the RN, assists the surgical team by acting as the primary scrub person who handles instruments, supplies and equipment during surgical procedures.

Schedule:

37.5 hours a week, 3 12.5 hour shifts

Sign on bonus – $15,000 new grads, $20,000 1-2 years’ experience, $30,000 2+ years’ experience

Responsibilities
  • Respects and protects the patient’s rights to confidentiality and privacy and discloses information only for professional purposes which are in the patient’s best interests with full consideration of their legal rights.
  • Provides safe patient care by verifying patient identification and assuring the presence of the necessary instrumentation, supplies, equipment, and implants.
  • Adheres to aseptic practices to protect patients from injury, minimize wound contamination and reduce patient risk for surgical site infection.
  • Applies basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology and pharmacology for optimal surgical patient care.
  • Maintains knowledge of surgical techniques, instrumentation, equipment and supplies necessary for procedures.
  • Complies with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical disinfectants and other hazardous substances.
  • Demonstrates the ability to problem solve in relation to the procedure being performed and respond appropriately to emergencies or changes in procedure.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail and anticipates surgeon’s needs when scrubbed on any surgical procedure.
  • Assumes responsibility for accurate sponge, sharp and instrument counts, correct medication labeling on the sterile field and correct handling and labeling of specimens.
  • Active participant in the “TIME OUT” prior to the incision.
  • Maintains knowledge of surgical techniques, instrumentation, equipment and supplies necessary for procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization and instrument processing.
  • Assists with the development and clinical precepting of students and new employees.
  • Maintains equipment and utilizes supplies in a safe, cost effective manner.
  • Complies with hospital attendance policy and department staffing policy and rotations.
  • Adheres to hospital and department specific dress code policy.
  • Complies with hospital and departmental policies and procedures and adheres to external agency requirements.
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements. Takes responsibility for own professional development.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with all members of the health care team and related departments to provide accurate information about the perioperative care of the patients.
  • Displays a positive attitude and works to achieve an environment of respect, accountability, teamwork, integrity, and compassion. Does not support or take part in disruptive or negative behavior.
  • Formulates and maintains effective working relationships with peer, managers and other surgical team members.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and procedures and standards of care, which contribute to the achievement of the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Cross trains and rotates to other clinical areas in Perioperative Services as needed.
Qualifications
  • Must meet one or more of the following requirements in compliance with CT regulations:
  • (1) Successfully completed a nationally accredited surgical technology program and holds and maintains certification as a surgical technologist (certification must be within 6 months of hire date) from a national certifying body that certifies surgical technologists recognized by the Department of Public Health.
