Overview of The Rowan Center & KidSafeHQ:
The Rowan Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual violence and providing prevention education throughout Lower Fairfield County. For 46 years, we have provided crisis counseling, advocacy, education, and long-term healing services in a trauma-informed, inclusive, and survivor-centered manner.
In addition to our prevention and crisis response work, The Rowan Center operates the Trauma Recovery Practice, offering long-term therapy and EMDR-based treatment for survivors of any form of trauma across Connecticut.
KidSafeHQ is The Rowan Center’s statewide digital safety platform designed to equip parents and caregivers with the tools they need to protect children from online and offline harm, including sextortion, grooming, cyberbullying, deepfakes, and digital exploitation. The platform combines expert insights, local law enforcement guidance, and trusted resources to help families navigate today’s rapidly changing digital world.
Position Overview:As a full-time Community Educator, you will play a vital role in delivering sexual assault prevention education across Lower Fairfield County and supporting KidSafeHQ. You will work closely with the Director of Education & Outreach to develop and present programs to students, school professionals, and community groups, and to help expand education and outreach related to online and offline child safety.
Additionally, you will represent The Rowan Center in the community and assist in the delivery of essential services, including support for survivors of sexual violence.
- Deliver age-appropriate and developmentally suitable sexual assault prevention education to students ranging from kindergarten through college.
- Assist in the creation and revision of educational materials and presentations to ensure they are current and effective.
- Facilitate awareness training sessions for professionals and parents, focusing on sexual assault, harassment, and abuse prevention.
- Present to local businesses and community groups, raising awareness about sexual violence, prevention strategies, and KidSafeHQ resources for families.
- Collaborate with colleagues and volunteers to ensure high-quality program delivery in schools and other community organizations.
- Support KidSafeHQ by contributing to parent-facing safety education efforts, including helping develop content, community trainings, and outreach related to online and offline child safety.
- Assist with promoting KidSafeHQ in school and community settings and help connect families to digital safety tools and resources.
- Track educational data and prepare quarterly reports on the effectiveness of prevention education and KidSafeHQ-related outreach efforts.
- Successfully complete 40 hours of sexual assault crisis counseling training provided by The Rowan Center.
- Provide coverage on the 24/7 crisis hotline, including going to hospitals and police accompaniments, with the expectation that you can arrive at hospitals in Greenwich, Stamford, or Norwalk within 40 minutes of a call.
- Participate in staff meetings, community events, and fundraising activities to support The Rowan Center’s mission and the launch and growth of KidSafeHQ.
- Engage in professional development opportunities and foster relationships with community partners, including school districts, parent groups, and child-serving professional development opportunities and foster relationships with community partners.
- Support community education initiatives related to emerging online safety issues, including sextortion, grooming, and digital exploitation.
- Work flexible hours, including some evening and weekend shifts, depending on program schedules and events.
- A degree in education, public health, social work, women’s studies, sociology, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience working with children or teens is highly preferred, as well as experience in education, counseling, or crisis intervention.
- Strong communication, organizational, and public speaking skills highly preferred. Ability to work with diverse populations, particularly children and teens.
- Bilingual abilities and experience in customer service or volunteer work are a plus.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a car.
