Job Title:
Medical Assistant
The Medical Assistant supports physicians and clinical staff by performing a combination of clinical and administrative duties to ensure efficient patient care and smooth daily operations within the medical office.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties- Prepare patients for examinations and assist physicians during visits
- Take and record vital signs, medical histories, and chief complaints
- Perform basic clinical procedures (e.g., injections, EKGs, specimen collection) as permitted by state law
- Prepare exam rooms and maintain sterile instruments
- Administer medications as directed by a physician
- Document patient information accurately in electronic medical records (EMR)
- Schedule appointments and manage patient flow
- Answer phones, respond to patient inquiries, and relay messages
- Verify insurance, collect co-payments, and process billing information
- Maintain patient records and ensure confidentiality (HIPAA compliance)
- Handle referrals, prior authorizations, and prescription requests
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program
- Medical Assistant certification or eligibility to obtain
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology
- Ability to take and record vital signs (BP, pulse, temperature, weight, height)
- Experience with electronic health records (EHR/EMR) systems
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Professional, patient-focused demeanor
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality (HIPAA compliance)
- Basic computer and typing skills
- 1+ year experience in a medical office or clinic
- Bilingual (Spanish/other language)
- Experience in a specialty practice (family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, etc.)
- Strong multitasking and time-management abilities
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency with EMR systems and basic office software
- Professional demeanor with a compassionate, patient-focused approach
- Medical office or clinic setting
- Frequent interaction with patients, physicians, and healthcare staff
- May require standing, lifting, or assisting patients throughout the day
- Rooming patients and documenting chief complaints
- Assisting providers with exams and minor procedures
- Administering injections and medications (per state scope of practice)
- Performing EKGs, phlebotomy, or specimen collection (if applicable)
- Sterilizing instruments and maintaining exam rooms
- Infection control and safety procedures
- Scheduling appointments and managing phone calls
- Verifying insurance and collecting copays
- Updating patient records and demographics
- Handling referrals, prior authorizations, and lab orders
- Basic medical billing and coding knowledge (preferred)
