Reporting to the Firearms Licensing Office Supervisor for the collaborated licensing service of Staffordshire and West Midlands, the post holder will work as part of the Firearms and Explosives Licensing team based at Staffordshire Police HQ. The post holder will form part of a specialist team and have responsibility for processing and decision making on applications relating to certificates prescribed by firearms and explosives legislation.

This will include administrating on the National Firearms Licensing Management System (NFLMS), researching police systems, assessing medical information, applying the Police National Decision Model (NDM) and decision making whilst having regard for GDPR.

The Post Holder’s Core Tasks Will Focus On
  • Processing, decision making and elevating of all applications relating to certificates prescribed by firearm and explosives legislation. This includes the research of police systems, restricted IT databases whilst having regard for the Management of Police information requirements and GDPR.
  • Authorising the grant, renewal or variation of prescribed certificates on behalf of the chief officer of Staffordshire and West Midlands Police by virtue of numerous delegated authorities under Section 55(2) Firearms Act 1968 and 1988. The post works within a customer-based environment which at times can be challenging and potentially confrontational. Communication occurs via telephone, electronic, postal and face‑to‑face (on occasions).
  • Identifying applications that do not comply with approval criteria and refer them to a senior decision maker. The post will assist the senior decision maker in making informed decisions in line with national statutory and non‑statutory guidance and legislation to inform transparent decision making.
  • Identifying circumstances where the suitability of certificate holders is drawn into question and refer them to a senior decision maker.
