Job Description & How to Apply Below

Job Description Summary Become part of a winning team and help to deliver the Green Energy transition.

The North and South Europe Grid System Integration (GSI) team designs and delivers a wide range of high voltage AC and DC transmission projects, and is looking for a “Primary and Plant Design - Verification and Validation” Engineer to join the team.

These large and complex projects have many design elements and requirements, and it is critical that all the design work undertaken fully takes into account the complete range of needs and delivers a design that meets its functional objectives.

As a “Primary and Plant Design - Verification and Validation Engineer”, you will be responsible for reviewing the primary station design, and associated plant and equipment, across a range of projects, and assessing whether it meets the required quality, safety, customer and regulatory standards, and fully satisfies the operational needs of the Customer. Should any area of concern be identified, you will work closely with, and advise the design team, on the best way to resolve the issue.

Role Overview
  • Develop a specific design quality plan in collaboration with the engineering leader on each project.
  • Define actions and ‘hold points’ where the V&V Engineer will review elements of the design and provide approval before proceeding to the next phase, and identify areas of risk or complexity that require additional focus.
  • Conduct independent assessment of design information and attend key design reviews.
  • Advise the design team during progress, investigate non-conformances for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure the design meets customer specifications and required electrical, mechanical and environmental characteristics or parameters.
  • Confirm the design achieves its functional requirement, aligns with preceding or corresponding aspects, and interfaces correctly with other disciplines.
  • Verify that the design can be constructed efficiently, contains necessary maintenance provisions, and includes required safety systems.
  • Ensure all design work is hazard‑free and poses no risk to operatives during construction, operation, maintenance, or decommissioning.
Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you will have the following qualifications and experience:

  • A minimum of a first degree in Power Engineering or a related electrical engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Significant experience working in a senior role involving design or review of high voltage substation layouts, plant designs and related activities.
Professional Knowledge
  • The layout and arrangement of high voltage substations (Above 132kV) using both AIS and GIS technology.
  • The electrical, mechanical and environmental performance requirements of high voltage substations, and the application parameters of the switch gear used to facilitate the primary system.
  • The application design of auxiliary plant used to create sub‑systems within a high voltage substation environment.
  • The design and performance of high voltage earthing grids.
Technical Understanding
  • The construction of high voltage substations, particularly brownfield sites, and how design supports these requirements.
  • Maintenance of high voltage substations and the facilities needed within the design to enable safe and practical maintenance.
Desired Characteristics
  • Experienced and proven substation design engineer with a significant portfolio of high voltage substation projects.
  • Familiarity with electro‑mechanical considerations of high voltage electrical engineering and comfortable designing primary heavy current systems, as well as plant and equipment.
  • Capable of reviewing designs as a desk‑top exercise and as an independent expert at design reviews, and able to clearly articulate required adjustments or changes.
  • Team player with good communication and interpersonal skills, capable of self‑management, and exhibiting flexibility, resilience and a self‑learning attitude.
