Position: Skills for Life Tutor - ESOL

Staffordshire County Council is excited to offer an opportunity within its Adult Learning Service for a committed and enthusiastic ESOL Tutor to join the Skills for Life team.

Our ESOL provision supports adults across Staffordshire to develop the language skills they need to build confidence, access employment, participate in their communities, and thrive in everyday life. This role is ideal for someone passionate about empowering learners, championing inclusion, and delivering high‑quality teaching that makes a genuine difference.

The tutor will work closely with the Resettlement Team, part of the Children and Families Directorate, to deliver a bespoke programme that supports adults settling in Staffordshire. The project aims to help learners build language, confidence and skills necessary for prosperous, independent lives and to develop a strong sense of belonging within new communities.

You will be part of a supportive and innovative team that values collaboration, creativity and learner‑centred practice. If you are motivated to help adults achieve meaningful progress, this could be the job for you.

Teaching will take place in community venues across all districts of Staffordshire, reflecting our commitment to accessible, localised learning that meets residents where they are.

As this post is funded as part of a fixed‑term programme, it is part of a three‑year project scheduled to run until 31 March 2029. Applicants should therefore be aware that the role is time‑limited in line with the funding period.

Main Responsibilities
  • Plan, prepare and deliver engaging ESOL learning programmes from Pre‑Entry to Level 2 within community settings across Staffordshire.
  • Use a range of teaching methods and resources that are accessible, culturally sensitive and responsive to diverse learner needs.
  • Carry out effective initial and diagnostic assessments to establish learners’ starting points, needs and aspirations.
  • Support learners to develop English language skills relevant to everyday life, employability, digital participation and community integration.
  • Use Recognising And Recording Progress and Achievement (RARPA) processes to set individual learning goals, track progress and evidence achievement.
  • Create and maintain accurate records, ensuring compliance with funding, audit, safeguarding and quality assurance requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, partners and referrers to promote ESOL provision and widen participation across local communities.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, continuous quality improvement, and service‑wide initiatives linked to the Skills for Life Strategy.
  • Foster a safe, welcoming and inclusive learning environment where learners feel respected, confident and motivated.
The Ideal Candidate
  • A recognised teaching qualification and a minimum level 4 in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
  • Experience of teaching ESOL to adult learners, or strong transferable experience from community learning, FE, employability or skills‑based programmes.
  • A good understanding of the ESOL curriculum, adult learning principles, and the barriers faced by adults with limited English.
  • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to build positive, supportive relationships with learners.
  • Confident digital skills and experience using online learning tools to enhance teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • A flexible and proactive attitude, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Above all, you will bring a genuine passion for helping learners develop their confidence, voice and independence through high‑quality ESOL learning.

Interviews will take place week commencing 23rd March 2026.
