Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Performs a variety of semi-skilled and manual work in the operation, maintenance and repair of water production facilities and systems. As this is a trainee position, applicants that have obtained the TCEQ Class “D” Water Operator License are preferred when being considered for employment. Any candidate considered for this position must obtained the TCEQ Class “D” Water Operator License within the first 90-days of employment and the Class “C” Surface Water and/or Groundwater Operator License within 24 months of employment.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Water Production Manager with guidance from the District’s Class A, B, and C Water Operators.
- Assists in pump operations, daily maintenance of equipment, maintenance of equipment per O&M manuals.
- Assists in monitoring mixing of chemicals for treatment, backwash membranes as required.
- Assists in water production process.
- Assists in monitoring all tank levels.
- Assists in testing water samples to determine acidity, color, and impurities.
- Records data such as chemicals used for treatment, water turbidity, water pressure, run time of pumps, Chemical weights, and feed rate.
- Records daily flows at the Surface Water Treatment Plant, Ground Water Storage Tanks, and Elevated Storage Tanks.
- Monitors the surface water tank levels, daily distribution CL2 samples, and security at plants.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software. - Ability to participate and effectively utilize safety procedures.
- Valid Class "C" Driver License
- Class “D” Water Operator License preferred. The position must obtain a Class D” Water Operator License within the first 90-days of employment and a Class “C” Surface Water and/or Groundwater Operator License within 24 months of employment.
- High school graduate or GED required.
- Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities for the position is preferred.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; use stairs and ladders, climb; balance; stoop, kneel; crawling, bending, and twisting.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions.
- The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Attendance is an essential function of this position and in the event of an emergency this position may be required to work in order to perform essential services needed to sustain operations.
- Subject to 24-hour emergency callbacks and requires working varying hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays.
- Safety regulations prohibit operators from wearing contact lenses when working with certain chemicals or from wearing beards or other facial hair that prevents a proper respirator fit. Must pass annual respirator physical and fit testing.
