Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Patient Care Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Provide patient care, based on physical, psychosocial, education, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the guests/patients served in assigned service
  • Provide for effective and safe patient outcomes through practice, judgment and critical actions
  • Ongoing communication with patients, nursing colleagues and other members of the health care team regarding patient's status and care
  • Take self-directed or self-motivated initiative to do more than is expected or required in the job
  • Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration of the patients plan of care from admission to discharge to ensure safe transitioning and continuum of care
  • Participate in Unit/Department Performance Improvement (PI) activities
Specific Job Functions May Include But Not Limited To
  • Welcomes patients and checks for proper identification bracelets
  • Prepares the patient for assessment/admission, physical examination and procedures
  • Recognizes and responds to opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care appropriate to age of patients on the unit
  • Obtains clinical data, vitals, and documents findings; notifies RN of abnormal results
  • Draws intravenous or capillary blood with proper aseptic technique and processes specimens to expedite throughput
  • Performs venipuncture for laboratory tests
  • Follows through with collecting, labeling, and transporting specimens
  • Performs EKGs as directed
  • Ensures presence, functionality and cleanliness of equipment; maintains code cart and emergency equipment
  • Applies bandages, slings, compression boots and hypothermia blankets as directed by RN
  • Assists in patient transport and with meals as needed
  • Checks inventory and restocks as directed; ensures room is prepared for admission
  • Provides direct hygiene and comfort care, including bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, incontinent care, and bed making
  • Assists with dressing and manages patient belongings per property checklist
  • Performs and documents glucose finger sticks and collects other specimens as directed
  • Provides post mortem care
  • Obtains and documents patient weights and intake/output
  • Maintains a safe patient environment by responding to call lights promptly and communicating changes to the RN
  • Delivers care tailored to patient population needs (age, culture, language, hearing/vision impairment, etc.) and communicates at the patient/guardian level
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned
Qualifications Education, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Required
  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Completion of one of the following:
    Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant or Patient Care Technician program; or Fundamentals of Nursing program; or HMH PCT Apprenticeship Program; or equivalent medical background experience (EMT, Home Health Aide, CMA, MA, PCT, Nursing Assistant)
  • Ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing patient needs, strong sense of accountability, teamwork, ongoing education, and commitment to high-quality care

Note:

Candidates not completing a program but meeting other requirements may be considered for the HMH PCT Apprentice Program with transfer to PCT role upon completion.

Skills And Abilities

Preferred
  • Experience or certification in phlebotomy and checking EKG, vital signs, and blood glucose
