Carmichael UK is recruiting for an experienced Site Engineer to join a Tier 1 contractor delivering a major highways project in Cambridgeshire.

This role is ideal for an engineer with strong technical knowledge across earthworks, drainage, and highways pavements, and experience working to National Highways standards.

The Role

As Site Engineer, you will support the day-to-day delivery of works on site, working closely with the Section Engineer, supervisors, and wider project team to ensure safe, compliant, and high-quality delivery.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Interpreting and working to design specifications and drawings in line with DMRB and Specification for Highway Works (SHW)

  • Setting out and overseeing earthworks, drainage, and highways pavement activities

  • Operating GPS and total station setting-out equipment

  • Reviewing designs and raising technical queries with the Section Engineer

  • Communicating effectively with engineers, supervisors, designers, enabling functions, and client representatives

  • Contributing weekly to the 4-week lookahead programme for your works

  • Coordinating with supervisors to manage clashes with other site activities

  • Supporting the delivery of Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs)

  • Identifying, reporting, and closing out Non-Conformances

About You

To be considered for this role, you will have:

  • Proven experience as a Site Engineer on highways or civil engineering projects

  • Strong understanding of earthworks, drainage, and pavement construction

  • Experience working to DMRB and SHW standards

  • Competence using GPS and total station equipment

  • Strong communication and coordination skills

  • A proactive approach to quality, safety, and compliance

A National Highways Passport is desirable but not essential.
