Purpose of the Role

The Head of Technology will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of really moving, providing strategic and operational leadership for our development & testing teams. As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), you will define our long‑term technical vision, development practices, to ensure our platforms, products, and teams are equipped to drive growth, innovation, and operational excellence.

You will also have responsibility for architecture, security, and IT operations, ensuring we build a scalable and modern platform.

As the Head of Technology, you will lead and inspire our development and test teams. You will champion best‑in‑class engineering practices including the effective use of AI tools to accelerate development productivity and quality. You will also oversee cloud infrastructure and strengthen our cyber security maturity.

Collaborating closely with product, commercial, and data teams, you will help deliver seamless, customer centric digital experiences while continually improving performance, cost efficiency, and resilience. The Head of Technology role is offered on a hybrid basis requiring a minimum of 2 days a week attendance at our office in central St Albans, a short walk from St Albans City station. You will also be required to attend the office for company team days, occasional ad‑hoc meetings and on‑site network/IT maintenance.

Key Responsibilities Technology Strategy
  • Set the tech vision and multi‑year roadmap.
  • Shape a scalable, modern platform architecture.
  • Advise SLT with clear technical and commercial insight.
  • Identify and apply emerging tech opportunities.
  • Prioritise initiatives with Product using impact‑led methods.
Engineering Leadership
  • Lead and develop Development and Testing teams.
  • Champion high standards in code quality, testing and performance.
  • Drive modern Dev Ops (CI/CD, automation, observability).
  • Partner with Product/Commercial to improve our digital marketplace.
  • Boost productivity through AI‑assisted engineering.
Cyber Security & Risk
  • Own and mature the cyber security strategy.
  • Ensure continuity, incident response and disaster recovery.
  • Manage risks across cloud, SaaS, devices and networks.
  • Set governance for responsible AI use.
Cloud, Infrastructure & IT Ops
  • Oversee Azure, Vercel, Cloudflare and hosting environments.
  • Ensure uptime, performance, scalability and resilience.
  • Optimise infrastructure and tooling spend.
  • Manage core systems (Entra, Intune, MS365, DNS, password manager).
  • Lead IT support, onboarding, off‑boarding and device setup.
Financial & People Leadership
  • Build and manage technology budgets.
  • Negotiate effectively with vendors.
  • Foster a collaborative, learning‑driven engineering culture.
  • Mentor technical leaders and support career growth.
Leadership & Delivery
  • Proven leadership of multi‑disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong appreciation for testing (automated, functional, UAT).
  • Experience delivering digital products in commercial environments.
  • Practical experience with Agile (Scrum, Kanban).
  • Ability to manage budgets and technical trade‑offs.
IT Operations & Soft Skills
  • IT Service Management and system admin experience.
  • Ability to maintain IT equipment and local networks.
  • Strong communicator with excellent stakeholder skills.
  • Good understanding of UX, usability and accessibility.
