Pay dependent on qualifications, the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement, and in accordance with Oregon's Pay Equity Act.

Position OverviewThe City of Springfield is seeking to fill a Public Works Technician position to perform tasks to maintain streets, sanitary sewer systems, surface and subsurface storm drainage systems, street signs and surface markings, equipment, and landscaped areas. Technicians drive and operate equipment and vehicles.
Training for those without experienceThe Operations Division provides an inhouse training program tailored for public works maintenance employees. Training includes vehicle and equipment operating, a curriculum designed for maintaining public infrastructure, and a great team to learn with. Training for those with experienceWe have a spot for you too! The Operations Division has a wide variety of vehicles and equipment ranging from dump trucks, backhoes, street sweepers, combination vacuum/jet trucks, hydro jet trucks, paving machine and much more. Minimum Qualifications for Public Works Technician I- High School or GED
- Must be 18 years old or older
- Valid Oregon Driver’s license at time of appointment
- Oregon Commercial Learner's Permit must be obtained within 6 months of appointment (City provided training)
- Oregon Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B and endorsements must be obtained within one year of appointment (City provided training)
Public Works Technician II must meet the minimum requirements for the Technician I level and possess a minimum of three years of specialized experience related to public works and equipment. An assessment of skills and knowledge will be conducted during the interview and selection process.
Physical RequirementsThis position frequently works in varying outdoor weather conditions and frequently works near moving mechanical equipment. It requires the ability to lift objects that could weigh a maximum of 80 pounds. Employees with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) are subject to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.
Selection and Interview ProcessApplicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be asked to complete basic math and reading comprehension skills check. Applicants invited to skills checking will be directly notified.
The selection process will include: interviews, reference checks, background investigation; as well as, post-offer (conditional offer) medical certification, drug and alcohol screening, and physical abilities test.
As a part of our selection process, it will be necessary for candidates to provide the names and email addresses of up to five professional references (including two managers) that can provide information on work performance. To avoid any delay in the process, we ask candidates to start gathering reference information now (name, email address, contact info and time period you worked together).
Additional information regarding reference checking will be emailed to candidates at a later date through the Skill Survey Pre-Hire 360 system.
All testing and selection processes will be done in accordance with the Oregon Veteran’s Preference in Public Employment Law.
