Position: Patient Billing/Services Representative II (Float) - Otolaryngology

Overview

Position Summary and Scheduled Hours
: 40 hours per week. The Patient Service Representative II (PSRII) is responsible for capturing, updating and verifying patient demographic and current insurance information to ensure maximum reimbursement for the Otolaryngology department. PSRs also schedule patient follow-up visits for providers. The PSR serves as a liaison between staff, patients, healthcare professionals and the general public, advocating for patients’ needs. The PSR obtains insurance information and referral forms and counsels patients on financial assistance when seen in department for services.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work on pre-arrival alerts (insurance, referrals, etc.).
  • Update and verify patient insurance, billing and demographic information in EPIC for reimbursement; check eligibility electronically or manually as needed.
  • Collect fees for services (copay, deductible, self-pay, cosmetic services, consults, surgery pre-pays and past balances) and record in EPIC.
  • Check patient in through EPIC and update demographics, insurance, patient portal access, and pharmacy information; verify referrals received, scanned and linked to appointment.
  • Schedule return patient appointments, patient testing and procedures.
  • Maintain familiarity with insurance companies and their reimbursement policies.
  • Balance cash drawer daily.
  • Answer incoming department telephone line and assist as needed.
  • Check patient out and print After Visit Summaries (AVS).

Physical Effort: Typically sitting at a desk or table; repetitive wrist, hand or finger movement.

Education and Certifications

Required Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent, or combination of education and/or experience.

Certifications / Professional Licenses: Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association or American Red Cross. More than one credential may be required depending on the role.

Work Experience

Billing systems and third-party claims and/or medical office setting; related customer service (3 years).

Additional Qualifications
  • Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within one month of hire date.
  • Online BLS certifications without a skills assessment component are not sufficient to meet BLS requirements.
