Position Information

Part‑time Maintenance Electrician – Springfield Campus – Facilities Maintenance – Unclassified – $27/Hourly – Part‑time hours Monday to Friday 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM – Available to work part‑time during regular business hours – Open until filled.

Primary Duties
  • Performs journeyman‑level electrical work: installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of electrical systems, equipment, fixtures and related electro‑mechanical systems. Inspects and tests electrical components to locate and diagnose faults and performs required repairs through replacement of parts or re‑wiring of circuits in accordance with applicable Electrical Industry Codes. Provides estimates for repair/replacement costs beyond the capability to perform.
  • Ensures electrical distribution systems up to 600 V are safe, meet power supply requirements and comply with applicable codes by maintaining, modifying and repairing systems; calculates branch circuit loads, interprets wiring diagrams and schematics and determines wiring methods and requirements.
  • Reduces need to purchase new/replacement electric motors by maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing single‑ and three‑phase electric motors; salvages parts inventory and replaces starter switches, electrical leads, fuses, insulators, gears, bushings and bearings.
  • Provides technical assistance in purchase of new or replacement electrical and electro‑mechanical equipment or systems by reviewing and preparing equipment specifications and advising the Superintendent of Facilities Maintenance on equipment capability and compatibility, installation requirements and costs.
  • Reduces likelihood of interruption of electrical power to critical campus operations by monitoring and repairing highly regulated power supplies to computer systems and other facilities requiring constant voltage with minimal fluctuations.
  • Contributes to a safe campus environment during darkness by servicing and maintaining all exterior lighting on campus, including mercury vapor, high‑pressure sodium and metal‑halide lamps as assigned.
  • Assists with documenting the cost of repairs and services by keeping records of time and materials to be charged to each job using the work‑order system and providing periodic status reports to the designated supervisor.
  • Complies with policies, laws and regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal and use of chemical substances and materials to reduce liability regarding the University’s compliance with federal regulations.
  • Inspects electrical jobs performed by outside electrical contractors to ensure installations meet current National Electric Code Standards and approved University standards.
  • Promotes preventive maintenance of electronic test equipment and mechanical tools by keeping accurate records of each piece of equipment, performing spot checks and periodic cleaning and servicing.
  • Performs other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent plus completion of a certifying technical training program in electrical maintenance or completion of an electrician’s apprenticeship. Significant work experience may substitute for required education, training or apprenticeship.
  • Experience: At least six years of progressively responsible experience in the electrical trade. Must include thorough working knowledge of National Electrical Codes for installation and maintenance of electrical systems.
  • Skills: Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints and electrical schematics; apply electrical formulas and conversion tables; use electrical test equipment and small hand and power tools; computer literacy.
  • Effort: Near‑visual acuity, depth perception, field of vision and color vision. Ability to lift and transport materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lb on a frequent basis and up to 100 lb on an occasional basis. Proficiency in manual and electrically‑powered tools, movement throughout campus, working in confined spaces, climbing stairs and working k performed indoors and out‑doors, occasionally in dusty, noisy environments or with work hazards.
