Green City Growers is expanding its presence in New York City metropolitan area and looking to hire an Urban Farmer
. Currently, this position is part‑time, one day a week (minimum 8 hours), with the potential for growth. It focuses on maintaining hydroponic indoor vegetable growing at two different sites, with some additional work in raised bed gardens and educational pop‑ups for corporate employees. This is a perfect position for someone who loves working with plants indoors by themselves and is a self‑starter with the ability to see work through with a high degree of independence and is looking for an exciting new opportunity.
The position is supported by a Boston‑based team, with weekly phone calls and documentation on a company iPad. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, a positive attitude, be transparent, and maintain a strong sense of personal responsibility.
- Garden Management: Maintain crop production in hydroponic units and a pollinator garden, harvest, communicate with chefs, document visits, maintain and clean all onsite infrastructure and equipment, and manage the relationship with customers onsite. Attention to detail needed to maintain high standards for plant health, food safety, and beautiful gardens.
- Education and Programming: Engage with members of the public and corporate employees on‑site.
- Customer Service: Be the face of GCG on site and handle communications with clients and participants. Can occasionally facilitate educational workshops and activities, with flexibility to move that week’s working day.
- Communication: Will have weekly phone call with Boston, check schedule, check email weekly, update photos in Dropbox, and update maintenance logs in the GCG CRM. Pro‑actively communicate additional site needs and customer feedback as needed for continual internal improvement.
- Experience as a self‑starter, problem solve, and bringing up issues. Experience working efficiently and prioritizing tasks.
- Has organic gardening and/or hydroponics experience and is phenomenal with engaging with people in the garden.
- Travel to Boston once or twice a year for in‑house training and company get‑togethers.
- Experience with food service standards, such as work with a chef or cafeteria.
- Ability to work a longer day if additional site opportunities come up.
- A driver’s license and clean driving record (a personal vehicle is not necessary). Following a conditional offer of employment, GCG may require a motor vehicle record check on all final candidates.
- Interest in site visits with potential clients in the NYC area.
