Summary

The Post/Pre‑Op Registered Nurse provides specialized care to patients before and after surgery, performing assessments, administering treatments, monitoring for complications, and coordinating with the surgical team.

Essential Work Functions
  • Assess patients pre‑operatively, reviewing medical history and performing physical examinations.
  • Prepare patients for surgery and educate them on procedures and postoperative care.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients transferring from the operating room and monitor post‑anesthesia condition.
  • Monitor patients post‑operatively for complications, managing pain and recovery.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments per approved nursing techniques.
  • Maintain awareness of comfort and safety needs in the perioperative setting.
  • Observe and document patient conditions, treatments, and significant incidents, notifying the care team of changes.
  • Take vital signs and respond to deviations.
  • Respond promptly to emergency situations using pre/post‑op nursing standards and protocols.
  • Accurately document patient assessments, interventions, and recovery progress in medical records.
  • Develop and deliver individualized patient and family education plans.
  • Collaborate with the surgical team and other providers to ensure comprehensive pre‑ and post‑operative care.
  • Participate in patient handoff communications for continuity of care.
  • Operate and monitor pre‑ and post‑op equipment such as ventilators, monitors, and infusion pumps.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within scope of practice.
  • Adhere to hospital safety protocols, infection control guidelines, and regulatory standards.
Required Qualifications
  • One year of recent experience as a Pre/Post‑Op RN.
  • Valid RN license compliant with state regulations.
  • Current BLS (AHA/ARC) certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ACLs certification.
  • PALS certification.
  • Other certifications and licenses may be required for this position.
Required Essential Skills
  • Critical thinking, service excellence, and good interpersonal communication skills.
  • English language literacy for reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions, follow verbal cues, and proficiency with PC skills.
  • Physical abilities: remain stationary, move equipment (50‑100 lbs), push, pull, bend.
  • Interpersonal skills: collaborate with diverse personnel maintaining a positive attitude and professionalism.
  • Technical/motor skills: fine manipulation, assist with procedures, use departmental equipment.
  • Mental requirements: cope with frequent public interaction, meet deadlines under pressure, work under supervision or independently, handle irregular schedules and maintain concentration.
  • Sensory: visual acuity and effective communication.
