AboutThe Role
POAH Communities is currently seeking a Lifeguard. This position will work on a temporary basis for up to 40 hours a week, Memorial Day through Labor Day 2026. The work week includes two days off (e.g., Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday). Springfield is the largest city in western Massachusetts, and more than half of its residents experience a high housing cost burden, meaning they must devote more than 30% of their household resources to housing costs.
Solidly built in 1943 as military housing, Bay Meadow was converted to affordable housing in the 1980s. With its 100% project‑based rental assistance through the Section 8 program, the property represented an irreplaceable affordable housing asset. - Assist in maintaining the pool and surrounding area.
- Monitor resident and guest activity to ensure that all activities are safe.
- Provide personal assistance to any resident or guest in the pool or its surrounding area; this assistance may be of an emergency nature where people are at risk of personal injury.
- Work in an open, weather‑exposed area in and around water and surfaces of various textures and elevations.
- Must be at least 16 years old and be certified as a lifeguard and in CPR and First Aide. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends.
- Must be able to lift significant amounts of weight (e.g., a person in distress).
- Must be mobile in an un‑assisted fashion to react to emergency situations, e.g., assisting a swimmer out of water.
