Summary

Geriatric Psych Unit is seeking a Behavioral Resource Technician ("BRT") who is responsible for providing continuous observation of the patient or patients they are assigned to. The BRT role is to ensure that the patient does nothing to harm themselves or others. The BRT must maintain a safe environment and interact with the patient, family, and staff in a caring professional manner.

The BRT will provide care for the patient and may include bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning as assigned. When caring for two behavioral patients, minimal patient care is required. The BRT is responsible for reporting any changes in the patient's condition or behavior to the nurse immediately and documenting every 15 minutes during their shift. This description covers the essential functions of the position.

Incumbent is expected to perform other similar and related duties as assigned. Management has the right to change or add to the job responsibilities at any time.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provides age-appropriate care to patients. Demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages for the following age groups: child through older adult (Children, Adolescents, Adult, Geriatric).
  • Develops and maintains good human relations skills. Introduces self by name to the patient, PCT, and RN, 100% of the time. Maintains a respectful, empathetic, and caring attitude toward patients and families. Interacts professionally with the health care team; accepts changes in assignments to accommodate patient needs. Accepts constructive criticism as indicated by positive behavioral changes.
  • Provides constant observation of the patient and intervenes as necessary to ensure patient safety. Documents patient status every 15 minutes. Communicates patient information and observations promptly to the RN. Provides care for the patient (bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning) and assists with activities of daily living. Follows RN directions regarding patient limitations and privileges. Redirects the patient as needed and de-escalates to maintain a therapeutic environment.

    Reports significant observations to the RN.
  • Receives report from the RN and off-going BRT and reports for duty. Provides immediate care to maintain patient safety.
  • Maintains a safe environment for the patient. Remains with the patient during constant observation unless relieved, identifies ligature and safety risks, accompanies patients off the unit as directed, and remains with patients in transit. When responsible for two patients, may not leave one unattended.
  • Understands care for specific diagnoses such as suicidal behavior, eating disorders, withdrawal, PICA, Alzheimer's, anoxic brain injury, etc.
  • Communicates with patients to convey high priority status during busy times. Maintains patient confidentiality and demonstrates respectful non-verbal communication (eye contact, posture, etc.).
  • Participates in competency validations, educational activities, staff meetings, mandatory in-services, and ongoing professional development. Attends required programs and seeks to improve skills and knowledge.
  • Demonstrates competency for one-to-one observation of patients per policy, maintaining vigilance and alertness at all times.
  • Unit Information
    • S1400 is a 24-bed acute care unit providing care to medical patients who may require telemetry. Diagnoses include Alzheimer's/dementia, psych, sepsis, obstetrics, stroke, COVID-19, and cardiac conditions among others. Patient population ages range from 20 to geriatrics, with observation or outpatient extended stay status as applicable.

      GED or HiSET (Required)
    • Certifications:

      Basic Life Support - American Heart Association;
      Certified Crisis Prevention (within 60 days of hire) - Crisis Prevention Institute
