Summary

The radiation therapist is responsible for the safe administration of high doses of ionizing radiation under the direct supervision of the Radiation Oncologist. Responsibilities include acquiring and analyzing data for patient treatment, using imaging technologies for localization, and participating in treatment planning as prescribed by the radiation oncologist. The therapist acts as a primary liaison between patients and the radiation oncology team and supports communication with other health care providers, while remaining sensitive to patient needs through communication, assessment, monitoring, and care skills.

Adheres to profession standards, ethics, and applicable laws; job duties may change with departmental needs and medical advancements.

Job Responsibilities
  • Practices radiation safety according to policy and procedure.
  • Ensures proper identification of each patient and treatment site according to established policy and procedures.
  • Confirms radiation therapy written directive daily. Administers treatments as prescribed; contact the manager, senior therapist, or oncologist if orders are unclear.
  • Explains the procedure in layman’s terms; answers questions and reassures the patient.
  • Performs quality assurance activities: morning start-up, safety checks on equipment, chart checks and audits, dose verification, staff competencies, and other QA tasks as required.
  • Performs clinical functions: simulation, fabrication of immobilization devices, verification of patient setup, imaging, treatment planning, dose calculations, verification of treatment parameters, treatment delivery, and documentation.
  • Ensures accurate delivery of treatment fields using imaging technologies; reviews imaging and monitors patient progress, suggesting plan changes as appropriate.
  • Monitors patients for adverse side effects and communicates with appropriate personnel.
  • Reviews discharge instructions and follow-up with the patient as applicable.
  • Understands equipment function and analyzes equipment faults, seeking guidance to achieve safe resolution.
  • Maintains on-call responsibilities as part of an all-inclusive workflow.
  • Maintains knowledge of departmental and organizational policies and procedures; seeks clarification as needed.
  • Maintains knowledge of operator manuals and manufacturer recommendations for safe operation of radiotherapy equipment.
  • Participates in implementing new technologies and training staff as required.
  • Participates in regulatory inspections and accreditation activities as applicable.
  • Instructs and evaluates students during clinical rotations; precepts Radiation Therapist Students and Graduates.
  • Performs and completes other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains licensure and continuing education credits.
  • Required Work Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited Radiological Sciences Program in Radiation Therapy or equivalent from a two-year Certificate Program
  • Accredited programs must meet JRCERT standards
  • Preferred Work Experience
  • One year of experience. New graduates are welcome to apply.
  • Skills and Competencies

    Detail-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong technical skills and critical thinking. Ability to interact with all levels of staff in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.

    Education: Associates Degree (Required)

    Certifications: Radiation Therapy – American Registry of Radiologic Technologists
