Springfield Public Schools (SPS), an urban school district in Western Massachusetts, is currently accepting applications for full‑time and part‑time visual art teaching positions at the elementary and middle school levels. SPS students represent a diverse group of cultural, ethnic, and socio‑economic backgrounds, bringing rich perspectives and experiences into the classroom. Qualified candidates must have state certification, possess strong visual art content knowledge, a passion for teaching, excellent interpersonal skills, and solid classroom management abilities.
- Meet and instruct assigned classes in the designated locations and times.
- Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of established district curriculum goals, establishing and communicating clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
- Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation when requested by the immediate supervisor.
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the physical limitations of the location and the needs of individual or student groups.
- Implement the district’s philosophy of education, instructional goals and objectives, and performance expectations through instruction and action.
- Assess student accomplishments regularly; provide progress reports as required and communicate with parents when deemed necessary.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
- Diagnose learning challenges of students regularly, seeking assistance from district specialists as required.
- Takes necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Follow the SPS code of conduct and develop classroom rules that are enforced fairly and justly.
- Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals, and make written evaluations as required.
- Engage in a professional growth program that satisfies district requirements and personal development goals.
- Participate in the contractually approved teacher evaluation process, contributing to a mutually agreed-upon evaluation outcome.
- Attend building and district meetings to promote communication and shared decision making among staff.
- Attend traditional school‑sponsored activities (e.g., Back to School Night, Open House) as agreed upon by the building administrator and faculty.

- Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Highly qualified with required competency in the content area.
- Appropriate content/program area educator license (Visual Art) and grade‑level (PreK-8) licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
- Bachelor’s Degree with appropriate license; or
- Master’s Degree with appropriate content‑area license preferred and/or expected within five years.
