Role OverviewThe Service Truck Driver, as a Class A/B or CDL truck driver, is responsible for delivering temporary or permanent construction materials to job sites as instructed, always applying safe driving practices. The driver also inspects and maintains the assigned Service Truck, hauling materials or small equipment to or from job sites, reporting shortages, and assisting in loading and storing of materials.
The role operates on heavy construction projects, performing a wide variety of tasks and transferring between tasks as the workflow dictates.
- Obtain clear assignments and instructions each morning or the evening prior from the supervisor
- Drive safely to and from each job site as assigned
- Organize and secure load down to the truck bed for delivery to and from job sites, providers, etc.
- Load and unload cargo utilizing the truck‑mounted crane
- Deliver materials to sites as needed and as instructed
- Follow all state and federal motor carrier rules and regulations established by the Department of Transportation
- Prepare DOT‑required log of time on duty and driving
- Complete daily equipment pre‑inspection
- Operate, when required, under Lift Director supervision and work with crews on various activities in the heavy/civil, roadway, and bridge construction industry, including beam erection, demolition, concrete placement/construction, steel erection, pile driving, or other construction lifting activities
- Maintain compliance responsibilities set forth in OSHA standard Subpart CC, Cranes and Derricks in Construction (29 CFR –1442)
- Follow instructions correctly, communicate and respond to radio commands and/or ASME B30.5 Standard Hand Signals for Mobile Crane Operations regarding lift communications and/or lift instructions
- Inspect machines and equipment daily, perform routine maintenance procedures and minor repairs if required and requested by the fleet manager
- Perform general labor duties as needed
- Maintain visual and radio contact with ground operators according to best practices and site safety regulations, responding to questions and instructions clearly and quickly
- Provide additional support to other crane operators as necessary, including overtime, operating several types of equipment, training, or monitoring junior operators
- Maintain a current Load Chart and Operations Manual in the Service Truck cab, demonstrating Load Chart proficiency and usage, all in the language of the manufacturer’s instruction manual
- Demonstrate proficiency with the crane computer in correct configuration and work within limitations
- Participate in lifting load planning and execute the approved Lift Plan accordingly
- Inspect and select rated rigging (slings, cables, straps, blocks, hooks, shackles, etc.) prior to lifting operations to ensure all lifts are within equipment load limits and correctly rigged
- Demonstrate proficiency in handling, pre‑start inspections, post‑start inspections, maneuvering skills, shut‑down and securing procedures
- Work various shifts in a team environment, sharing responsibility and accountability for the day‑to‑day function of the team and senior management involved in running the project
- Perform daily safety and operational Service Truck duties and administrative paperwork, including the preparation and submittal of daily service truck inspection reports as per internal protocols and industry requirements; keep inspection records in a binder in the truck
- Operate the Service Truck safely with minimal supervision while handling multiple tasks
- Understand operation characteristics, controls, emergency skills, response to fire, power line contact, tipping, malfunction characteristics, and performance questions about the specific truck in use
- Be responsible for all safety aspects of operating the equipment
- Be able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely
- Assist in other duties as required while not operating the Service Truck
- Inspect the Service Truck and recommend appropriate actions to maintain it in good working order
