Under immediate supervision, responsible for operating vehicles ranging from pick-up trucks to tractor trailers used for hauling heavy equipment. Requires occasional heavy lifting and performs tasks related to maintaining and repairing the County Roads and Bridges system. Must be able to stand for prolonged periods during activities such as flagging, patching, and trimming.
- Cleans culverts, digs trenches, and shovels various materials, including carrion.
- Spreads patching materials from the back of dump trucks (requires lifting and turning with weights in excess of 40 lb.), fills and operates crack filling machines (requires lifting blocks weighing 50 lb. each to a height of 4 ft.), and manually handles the placement of Rip Rap in ditch areas, which may weigh over 50 lb. each.
- Cuts grass, trims weeds, and manages brush and trees manually and with chain saws.
- Handles concrete, rock, and asphalt, operating associated saws, compactors, grinders, and consolidators for patching and repairs, involving heavy lifting and turning.
- Picks up trash from the County Right of Way and maintains the Maintenance Facility Yard, buildings, trucks, and equipment free of trash and debris.
- Operates snow removal trucks equipped with plows and salt spreaders. May be required to work 16-hour shifts during snow removal operations, often alone in the truck.
Position Requirements /Training and
Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with endorsements for core knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicles, as specified in Section 391.35 of Federal Motor Carrier Regulations. Must obtain Flagger Certification within two months of hire.
Post-offer physical examinations, including Subpart E Physical Qualifications and Examinations (Sections ), alcohol tests (Section 382.301), and drug tests (Sections ), will be administered as per Federal Motor Carrier Regulations.
This position is union-represented per contract. The employee is expected to perform all duties covered by the union contract, excluding those specific to traffic sign maintenance, operation, and mechanic classifications.
The starting salary is $24.86 per hour ($51,717.55 annually). After successful completion of a one-year probationary period, the salary will increase to that of a Highway Maintainer as per the union contract.
