Environmental Protection Geologist

Job Overview

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Land (BOL), Permit Section, Groundwater Unit is hiring an Environmental Protection Geologist I. This position provides supervised training in geologic and hydrogeologic analysis of groundwater systems. The selected candidate will assist higher-level geologists in reviewing and regulating groundwater activities in accordance with Illinois regulations, including 35 Illinois Administrative Code, Subtitle F, Part 620 and 35 Illinois Administrative Code, Subtitle G rules.

• Participates in training to develop expertise in geologic and hydrogeologic analysis pertaining to permit review of Groundwater Systems at Hazardous/Non-Hazardous Waste facilities for the Bureau of Land (BOL), Permit Section, Groundwater Unit A, in accordance with regulations including 35 IAC Subtitle G rules and 35 IAC Part 620.
• Assists in developing technical reports in accordance with regulations pertaining to Groundwater including 35 IAC Subtitle G rules and 35 IAC Part 620; incorporates geologic and hydrogeologic data under the guidance of a higher-level geologist(s).
• Receives training, attends, observes, and participates in meetings, training, and continuing education.
• Observes higher-level staff and participates in the interpretation and evaluation of groundwater permit application processes.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

• Requires a bachelor’s degree in geology, including at least 12 – 16 semester credit hours in groundwater geology, hydrology, hydrogeology, soil physics, and/or soil chemistry.
• Requires no previous experience.

• Requires a valid driver’s license.
• Requires the ability to travel.
• Requires ability to pass a name based background check.
• Within 90 days of employment, the position will be required to take and maintain working knowledge of 8‑hour annual refresher OSHA 29 CFR  training.
• Applicable revolving door restrictions apply; employees must notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) if offered non‑state employment during or within one year after ending state employment.
