Registered Nurse

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in the Operating Room (OR) is responsible for providing skilled nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. This role involves working in a fast-paced environment with 23 operating rooms, assisting with various surgical specialties (excluding Cardiovascular), and responding to emergency situations. The position requires a minimum of 3 years of experience, strong clinical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with the surgical team.

Responsibilities:

- Assist with a wide range of surgical procedures, including General Surgery, Neurology, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Transplant, Urology, and Trauma cases.
- Prepare the operating room for surgery, ensuring all equipment and supplies are available and functioning correctly.
- Circulate and scrub during surgical procedures, providing assistance to the surgeon and maintaining a sterile environment.
- Administer medications and monitor patients' vital signs during surgery.
- Provide pre-operative and post-operative care to patients.
- Respond to code situations and other emergencies within the OR.
- Ensure proper handling and labeling of specimens.
- Adhere to infection control and radiation safety protocols.
- Document patient care and related duties accurately in the electronic medical record (Cerner).
- Participate in the Universal Protocol (Time Out) procedure.
- Manage equipment, instrumentation, and supplies, including electrosurgical units and fiber optic light sources.

Required Skills &

Certifications:

- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Illinois (must be in hand or in application process).
- Minimum 3 years of experience in an operating room setting.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- General OR and Trauma experience.
- Level I trauma experience.

- Experience with Bariatric (Laparoscopic assisted cases), General Surgery (Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy, Colon resection, Hernia repair inguinal/umbilical, Laparoscopic assisted procedures, Mastectomy, Thyroidectomy partial/total, Whipple), Neurology (Cervical fusion, Craniotomy, Laminectomy/discectomy, Lumbar fusion), Orthopedic (Arthroscopy, Carpal Tunnel release, Closed reduction of fractures, Open reduction of fractures), Plastic Surgery (Free Flap - Microvascular), Transplant (Organ donation), Urology (Cystoscopy, Nephrectomy, Prostatectomy), and Trauma (Amputations, Gunshot/stab wounds, MVA (multiple injuries)) cases.
- Emergency management skills, including code response, fire safety, latex allergy, and malignant hyperthermia management.
- Proficient in administration of blood products, infection control, radiation safety, specimen handling/labeling, Universal Protocol (Time out) Procedure, and urinary bladder catheterization.

- Experience with Electrosurgical units and Fiber optic light sources/cords.

Preferred Skills &

Certifications:

- CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room) certification.
- CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) certification.
- Cerner charting experience.

Special Considerations:

- On-call requirement: 1 week per month (though not frequently needed).
- Must live at least 50 miles from the facility to apply.
- Will work with all service lines except Cardiovascular (CV).
- All requested time off must be reviewed and approved by the manager.
- The client may call off up to 36 hours per thirteen-week assignment without paying for the cancelled hours.

Scheduling:
- 5x8-hour shifts from .
- Weekend requirement: 1 weekend per month.
- Block schedules are not accommodated.
- Clinicians will rarely float within their skill set to meet facility needs.
