Position Overview
This position is accountable for collecting survey data while serving as a member of a survey crew. The incumbent assists in obtaining field survey data by operating and reading state of the art electronic survey instruments and utilizing software such as Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) used in conducting route, bridge, hydraulic and property surveys.
Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for maintaining a high level of efficiency in the day-to-day operations of the field crew as well as other duties as assigned.
- Collects and processes accurate and timely land survey data through the use of electronic surveying instruments and Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software.
- Develops, locates, and establishes new alignments in the field.
- Places and recovers aerial survey targets. Collects and processes photogrammetric control data through the use of GPS instruments and computer software.
- Obtains topographic and planimetric data for preparing plans, reports, right-of-way plats and legal descriptions.
- Cleans, repairs, and maintains surveying instrumentation and equipment.
- Analyzes and interprets land surveying records and data and assists with the preparation of right-of-way plats and legal descriptions.
- Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Current registration as a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Illinois, OR completion of a bachelor's degree in land surveying from an accredited college or university, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Surveying examination or Surveyor Intern license PLUS one year of experience in the practice of land surveying, OR completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related science including 24 semester hours of land surveying courses, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Surveying examination or Surveyor Intern license PLUS one year of experience in the practice of land surveying.
- Four years of experience in the practice of land surveying.
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of land surveying, knowledge of surveying standards and/or plats and plans preparation, and modern survey equipment and methods.
- Ability to perform third or higher order survey work and to make technical computations and estimates.
- Ability to supervise staff engaged in field and office surveying functions.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Software and Trimble Business Center.
- Active Remote Pilot (Small Unmanned Aircraft System - Part 107) License Agency Approvals.

- Extensive district wide travel and occasional statewide travel and occasional overtime.
- Physically demanding outdoor work in a variety of conditions and weather, including, but not limited to, active construction sites and roadways open to traffic.
