Required
Reporting to the College Archivist, the Assistant Archivist will assist in the day to day operations of the Springfield College Archives and Special Collections. Duties consist of helping researchers and students, answering reference questions, and monitoring and maintaining the reading room; supervising and training student and volunteer workers, maintaining work of high quality; processing College Records and Manuscript Collections, mainly having to do with Dr.
James Naismith and the Creation of basketball, and maintaining and updating the Archival databases - a working knowledge of DACS and Archives Space are of significant importance; working with the Archives multiple digital collections and helping to maintain and improve access while continuing to increase content - a working knowledge of Dublin Core and experience working with CONTENTdm would be ideal.

- Monitoring and running reading room.
- Supervising, training, and hiring Student and Volunteer Workers.
- Answering reference questions and helping researchers find information (both virtually and physically).
- Process and describe College Records and Special Collections.
- Maintaining and updating Archival databases and finding aids.
- Creating metadata for digital and collection items and maintaining online digital collections.
- Assisting in tours and educational/instructional activities.
- Graduation from an accredited institution with a Masters degree in Museum Studies, History, or Library Sciences.
- 2 years experience in an Archives.
- Supervisory experience with part-time, student, and voluntary help preferred.
- Knowledge of archival best practices, theory and standards.
- Skill in written and oral communication.
- Ability to direct and coordinate a diverse staff of part-time, undergraduate and graduate, and voluntary staff.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to amicably deal with a wide variety of individuals.
- Ability to engage the students, faculty, alumni, and general public about history in an Archival and Museum setting.
- Familiarity using DACS and working with Archives Space, including setting up finding aids within the Archivist Space Environment.
- Experience in the Dublin Core and other metadata standards.
- Skill in creation and maintenance of digital files in CONTENTdm or other Digital Content Management Software.
- Familiarity of the history and scholarship of the YMCA, Physical Education, and Sport.
- Knowledge of XML, XHTML and script writing.
